In a frame above the main entrance door of Holy Wisdom Monastery it is written, “That All May Be One.” On July 20, 2019, I had a glimpse of what this looks like when around 100 Hispanic people visited the monastery for the first time and mingled with the Holy Wisdom communities. It was a beautiful diversity of colors and languages. It reminded me of the prairie in bloom, the heard this phrase many times this week, in scripture and at Chapter. Then Sister Denise West showed me a magazine with an article with the same title. Carl Jung would call these events synchronicity. I cannot help but think that these are the “signs of the times” that Jesus tells us about. I wonder if God wants to tell me something. This experience was like lectio divina (divine reading) with the whole week of events as the “Word.” I feel very blessed by all the volunteers who came to help us and for all the Hispanic families who showed up and brought their blessings too. As they crossed under the door’s sign, “That all may be one,” it became true. It was a true communion with tamales and agua de horchata. Thomas Merton explains this much better than I can: “The deepest level of communication is not communication, but communion. It is wordless…beyond speech…beyond concept.”
