In 2016, John Philip Newell began a teaching initiative that is now called The School of Earth & Soul. Its purpose is to reawaken awareness of the sacred in all things and to help translate this awareness into compassionate action. The School has two main offerings, Celtic Wisdom and The Great Search, both following a three-year cycle of teaching and spiritual practice in annual retreats hosted around the country.
Holy Wisdom Monastery will be a site for the Earth and Soul School, with John Philip Newell leading the first retreat in The Great Search series, ‘Seeking the Sacred in a Time of Religious Exile.’ The focus of this first experience will be seeking an unbounded vision of the sacred in all things through the teachings of Thomas Berry, Nan Shepherd and Martin Buber. The Great Search series will continue with a focus on seeking a life-giving vision of wholeness and love (2024) followed by seeking a life-giving vision of wisdom and faith (2025). The recommended text for this three-year program is John Philip Newell’s book The Rebirthing of God: Christianity’s Struggle for New Beginnings. (The shared prayer book for this program is Praying with the Earth.)
We welcomed John Philip Newell to Holy Wisdom Monastery in May 2020 with a community conversation around his book, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul: Celtic Wisdom for Reawakening to What Our Souls Know and Healing the World. We are thrilled at this opportunity to host one of his school’s initiatives, The Great Search, for its invitation to explore resources that can ground us in times of spiritual uncertainty and religious exile.

Participants may join at any stage in the three-year cycle and attend any of the Earth & Soul venues across the country.
