Benedictine Sisters at Holy Wisdom Monastery Celebrate Community and Breaking Barriers Middleton, WI September 21, 2021 — A small community of Benedictine Sisters at Holy Wisdom Monastery celebrates a combined 151 years of religious life this weekend, Sept. 24-26, 2021, at their Celebration of Community. In addition, they welcome a new Sister into their community on Sunday, as Novice Everline Jeruto makes her first monastic profession. When asked what first attracted her to Holy Wisdom, oblate and volunteer Phyllis Lobdell shares, “It’s the quiet and contemplative nature. What I was really attracted to when I read about it on the website was the Benedictine spirituality and having a certain rhythm to your life. And also kind of being accountable to a community.” Phyllis was living in Illinois at the time and became a regular retreatant at the monastery. Curious about the blooming wildflowers on Wisdom Prairie? Want to learn their names? UW-Madison Arboretum naturalist Sylvia Marek and Julie Melton are holding a wildflower workshop on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2021 between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm. Stop at the monastery parking lot kiosk to see examples of the many flowers in bloom. Learn how to identify the plants and some of the insects that live with them. Then walk the prairie trails with one of our colorful prairie wildflower brochures as a guide. All ages and abilities are welcome. Learn about caring for the earth Children, parents, grandparents and friends are invited to Kids On the Prairie on Sunday, June 27. This month’s theme is exploring Wisdom Prairie. Using magnifiers and a little patience, we will investigate flowers and the insects that live on them. Sunday Assembly member, Rita Emmenegger, will help us look for monarch eggs on common milkweed. Hopefully we will see some monarchs. This month’s prairie exploration will be followed by a short walk to look for bluebirds that have recently fledged. Earth Week Walk for Kids This Sunday after Sunday Assembly, we invite children and their parents or grandparents to celebrate Earth Week with a walk on the monastery grounds. Kids On the Prairie walks are a chance for kids ages 5 to 15 to explore parts of the monastery grounds with a naturalist. Children 3-4 are also welcome with parent support. This month we will feature burned areas, signs of spring all around and whatever engenders a sense of wonder and surprise. We might even pull some garlic mustard!
