Kumiko Art Expressions

Jorge Gonzalez Lopez

May 4-July 14, 2024, at Holy Wisdom Monastery

Attendees will have the opportunity to see a unique art form that has not been seen before at Holy Wisdom Monastery. Kumiko Art was developed in Japan and is made from thin pieces of wood which are grooved, punched and mortised and then fit together without the use of nails or glue. Kumiko panels remain in place with pressure alone which is achieved through carefully calculating, cutting and arranging interwoven joints. Planes, saws, chisels and other tools are used to make the fine adjustments needed to assemble each delicate yet complicated work of art.

About the Artist

Jorge Gonzalez Lopez

Jorge has always been interested in Asian culture and began his exploration of Kumiko Art in 2018. He is self-taught and this is his first public exhibition. Jorge grew up in a family of artisans in San Jeronimo Mavati, Estado de Mexico, Mexico. “My mother helped support the family with her crafts – especially her crocheting. My father took woodworking classes when I was a child which sparked my own interest. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands.” Jorge moved to Madison 17 years ago to join one of his brothers already living here. “Everyone I’ve met here is so nice. My life is amazing.”

Art Exhibits at
Holy Wisdom Monastery

The Benedictine sisters at Holy Wisdom Monastery sponsor art exhibits every year as part of their mission. Usually held in the spring, summer and fall, these exhibits hang in the gathering area of the LEED-certified monastery building. Selected artwork is in keeping with the monastic environment and reflects the Benedictine values of beauty, balance, simplicity, contemplation, and reverence for creation.

This year, photographer Jennifer Peters has volunteered to be the monastery’s art curator. Jennifer feels a need to help other artists gain recognition for their work. “I’ve been very fortunate with my artistic endeavors. Ever since my own photography exhibit at the monastery in 2017, I have wanted to help other artists exhibit in this beautiful space.”

The exhibit is open to the public from May 4-July 14, 2024, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Tuesday through Friday and 10:00-11:00 am, Sundays, except holidays. The art gallery at Holy Wisdom is located in the gathering area in the monastery building.
