What Child is This: The Nativity Story in Scripture and Art

December 8, 2016 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

What Child Is This?: The Nativity Story in Scripture and Art will deeply enrich our preparation for and experience of Christmas. The “infancy narratives” in the gospels of Matthew and Luke may be so familiar for many of us that we miss their complex and multilayered meaning and significance. In this three-part program we will explore these stories through the twin lenses of contemporary biblical and theological scholarship and sacred art. Among our themes: the genealogies of Jesus; the historical, theological, and spiritual role and significance of Mary; and connecting the Nativity story to our own stories.

John-BuscemiJohn Buscemi
is a nationally recognized liturgical design artist and church architect. Now retired, he renovated or designed over 120 churches throughout the United States, including Santa Maria de La Paz Church in Santa Fe, New Mexico, St. Pius X Church in Billings, Montana, and the Cathedral of Sacred Heart in Richmond, Virginia. John also served as an adjunct faculty member at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois and Loyola Institute of Pastoral Studies in Chicago. During his career he shaped worship environments as small as chapels and as large as the Papal Mass in a cornfield in Des Moines, Iowa.

John says that his lifelong passion has been to seek and understand the intersection of liturgy, spirituality, and the arts. We are blessed to welcome him as our engaging and trusted guide through the endlessly fascinating stories of the birth of Jesus.
