Compassionate Communication: Right Relationships with myself and others

Facilitated by Mary Hoddy, HWM Oblate, and Mary Kay Reinemann

Assisted by Lynne Smith, Denise West, Paz Vital, and others from Madison Area Nonviolent Communication Practice Groups

As Oblates, we value deep listening and having what Benedict calls right relationships, but it’s not always easy. Compassionate communication is the intention to stay present to one another as we make a connection in which everyone’s needs are valued. This includes our own needs as well as the needs of others. This practice is based on Marshall Rosenberg’s Nonviolent Communication and Robert Gonzales’ Living Compassion, and it is aligned with the Rule of Benedict. This process includes learning how to listen to our own inner thoughts and discern how to use this information in a way that serves.

Mary Hoddy, M.S., is an independent consultant who is a Master Trainer with Global Learning Partners, and has Coaching Certification from the Association of Talent Development (ATD).  She was Director of Staff Education and Training at the Wisconsin Union, UW–Madison, for 27 years where developed a model of student-staff co-facilitation for both live and blended online classes. Mary teaches seminars for UW Continuing Studies in Professional Training and Appreciative Inquiry and co-facilitates Conscious Communication with practice groups in Madison, WI. She is currently in the 2-year LIFE Program studying Living Compassion with Robert Gonzales.

Mary Kay Reinemann is a retired teacher who discovered Marshall Rosenberg’s “Nonviolent Communication” (NVC) in May of 2004, and recognized it as a simple, generic, and transformative practice which she could hope to learn and integrate in a single lifetime. She began teaching practice groups in 2007 and currently facilitates several practice groups for ‘Conscious Communication’ based on the work of Rosenberg and Robert Gonzales’ Living Compassion processes. She has offered training in Wisconsin prisons, schools, churches, and service communities and is a founding member of Wisconsin Empathy Guild (formerly Madison Area NVC.)  She is currently studying with Robert Gonzales, former president of the international NVC Board of Directors. She is a member of Robert’s 2009/10 and 2014/15 LIFE programs.
