From a young age, Gary Eldred loved nature. He could be found hiking, fishing and exploring the woods and fields around Albany, Wisconsin where he grew up. Gary became aware that many of the wild places he enjoyed were being lost to development and increased agricultural pressure. “Reading Aldo Leopold’s Sand County Almanac gave me a new perspective on caring for the land,” Gary said. “I began to think about how I could give back to nature rather than always being a consumer.” Gary’s interest in native prairies emerged in the mid 1970s and he became one of the founders …

January 14, 2024 Holy Wisdom Monastery 1 Samuel 1:9-18,20; 1 Corinth 6:12-20, John 1:35-51 Patti La Cross It is a lovely and rare treat to hear from John’s gospel today, and my privilege to be steeped in it for a time. If Christmas celebrates the fact of divine life come to us, the fact of God become human, the fact of God-with-us, then Epiphany celebrates the truth of us-with-God, unveils for us the divinity of our humanity in Christ, reveals the divine glory in which we and all creation dwell. Today’s gospel, which comes from the gospel of Matthew is read …

Fourth Sunday of Advent December 24, 2023 2 Samuel 7:1-11, 16 Romans 16:25-27 Luke 1:26-38 Last weekend, my wife, Alison, and I had the good fortune to attend a live performance of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio by the Wisconsin Chamber Choir.  It is a piece of music that I love, and most years I begin playing it on the home stereo on Christmas Eve, listening to one of the six cantatas each day for the first six days of the Feast of Christmas.  It helps to remind me that the feast begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days.  …
