Benedict for Baby Boomers: Aging Gracefully in the Footsteps of St. Benedict

The Rule of St. Benedict is filled with timeless wisdom and practical insights for people regardless of how old they are. Nevertheless, it’s worth paying attention to what Benedict has to say about the “elders” of the monastery, pointing out that they are to be respected for the wisdom they have acquired. Unfortunately, those of us who live in our own fast paced, youth oriented culture can easily lose sight of that kind of wisdom because it’s often drowned out by trends, priorities and behaviors that run counter to what we know in our hearts to be of lasting value.  All the more reason to turn to the Rule of Benedict (RB) for reminders. That’s the purpose of this weekend retreat. It will focus on specific passages from the RB that can help us move into “elderhood” by dealing with the challenges of being older while embracing those things about it that are filled with grace.

Trisha Day spent many years as a member of the Associates of the Iowa Cistercians (similar to Benedictine Oblates). She has presented numerous retreats on Benedictine and Cistercian spirituality for lay persons and has written a number of publications based on the Rule of St. Benedict. She is the author of two books, “Inside the School of Charity – Lessons from the Monastery,” and “Less than Fully Catholic – Losing my Religion Finding my Faith.”
