SUMMARY:Six-legged Summit: An Insect Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a full day of learning all about the wonderful world of insects. This program involves multiple sessions\, including outdoor field trips\, indoor photo-filled presentations and family-friendly activities. All participants will receive lunch\, and can expect to bring home resources and inspiration to take action on behalf of insects\, as well as a renewed sense of awe and wonder. \nFor each concurrent session\, you can choose from two options including indoor presentations and guided hikes outdoors. \nSchedule\n\n8:45 am – Doors open\n9:00 am – Welcome & introduction\n9:15 – 10:30 am – Concurrent session I\n\nRobberflies with Mike Reese\nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser\n\n\n 10:45 am – 12:00 pm – Concurrent session II\n\nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding (outdoor tour)\nBumblebees with Jade Kochanski\n\n\n12:00 – 1:00 pm – Lunch\n1:00 – 2:15 pm – Concurrent session III\n\nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser (outdoor tour)\nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding\n\n\n\nSession Descriptions \nWelcome & Introduction: Join us for a brief introduction to why we’re here today. We’ll take a whirlwind tour of insect diversity\, be reminded of how much you already know about this large class of animals\, and learn how important insects are to our lives and to the workings of the natural world. \nRobberflies with Mike Reese: In this outdoor field trip\, we will explore prairie and woodland trails in search of robberflies\, an overlooked but amazing group of insects. Learn about robberfly ID\, ecology and their amazing hunting abilities. \nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser (indoor): Monarch butterfly populations have been declining over the last 25 years—essentially the entire time that we’ve been monitoring them. It is important to move beyond documenting this decline\, and focus on the challenge posed by monarch conservation and insect conservation in general. Come learn about the amazing biology of migratory monarchs\, how we can use data collected by scientists and public to understand what is driving monarch numbers\, and what we can do with that information. The take-home message will be how we can address species conservation—in our own gardens and beyond—in the face of climate and other human-driven changes.  \nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding (outdoor): More information coming soon. \nBumblebees with Jade Kochanski (indoor/outdoor): This session will offer an exploration of Wisconsin’s native bumble bees\, focusing on ecology\, conservation\, and identification. Participants will gain in-field identification experience and are encouraged to use their new knowledge to contribute to the WDNR Bumble Bee Brigade participatory science program. \nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser (outdoor): The odds are that there is milkweed\, monarchs’ only host plant\, growing somewhere in a neighborhood near you. Join us for a treasure hunt as we look for monarch eggs and caterpillars on milkweed growing in Holy Wisdom Monastery gardens and prairies\, and check out the other interesting animals that find food or a place to rest on these amazing plants. We’ll look closely at the unique flowers found on all milkweed plants\, and learn about the milky sap that gives the plants their name. \nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding (indoor): More information coming soon. \nLeaders\nJade Kochanski is a pollinator and restoration ecologist whose work focuses on bumble bee conservation in restored tallgrass prairie managed with prescribed fire across Wisconsin. She is committed to community-focused outreach.  \nKaren Oberhauser has studied monarch butterflies for almost 40 years\, using traditional lab and field techniques\, as well as the contributions of a variety of audiences through participatory science. She is now happily retired\, but spent most of her career at the University of Minnesota\, before becoming the director of the UW-Madison Arboretum from 1997-2023.    \nMike Reese has worked as a cook\, botanist\, high school math teacher\, golf and basketball coach\, and finally a high school librarian. While he has no formal academic training in the field of entomology\, he has gained a tremendous depth of knowledge from spending lots of time wandering around\, getting his feet wet and looking for whatever happens to be flying by.   \nEdgar Spalding grew up in rural Nova Scotia and became deeply interested in nature\, and a life-long birder (including photography). But\, in college he became interested less in nature and more in the physical and chemical aspects of life processes — physiology is the best word. So he returned to his native USA for grad school (Penn State)\, postdoctoral work (Yale)\, and joined the faculty at UW–Madison in 1994.  \nWho Can Attend this Event?\nOpen to all. Family friendly\, children welcome to attend with an adult. Activities are most appropriate for adults and kids 5+. \nCost\n\n$22 for adults\n$12 for kids 12 and under\n\nRegister\nPlease register by July 10\, 2025. There is no refund if you have to cancel your registration. \n \n

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Art Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Japanese practice of Forest Bathing\, or shinrin-yoku\, is becoming a prevalent way for people to increase their well-being by connecting with the natural environment through their senses. This easily accessible activity can benefit all ages\, and serves as a reminder to slow down and be mindful by simply immersing oneself in the sights\, sounds\, and smells of nature. \nIn Holy Wisdom’s new art exhibit\, local artists Jennifer Peters and Annette Knapstein share their work inspired by Forest Bathing as a “tangible expression of our sensory experience in nature.” Please join us for the Forest Bathing Art Exhibit Reception on Friday\, May 30\, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception begins | light refreshments will be served\n6:30 pm – Artists give brief talk about their work and invite questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nThe exhibit is on display in the Gathering Area of the monastery from May 21 – July 21\, 2025.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday 10:00 – 11:00 am. \nArtists – Annette Knapstein and Jennifer Peters\n \n“My family always encouraged creativity whether it was in music\, art or any other endeavor.” \nAnnette Knapstein grew up in Oregon\, Wisconsin\, and now lives in Middleton. Annette earned a degree in Economics and worked in advertising and marketing for more than 30 years. “I definitely used my love for the visual arts in my career\,” she laughed. Initially a photographer\, Annette began exploring colored pencils\, watercolors\, and acrylic painting several years ago. “My work is based on my impression of what I see\, rather than making an exact replica. My intention is to reflect how I feel about what I am experiencing and seeing.”  During COVID\, Annette spent a lot of time at Pheasant Branch Conservancy. “Being out in nature gave so much back to me – it was my safe refuge.” \n  \n  \n \n  \nJennifer Peters\, an expressionist photographer\, said her work in this exhibit is quite different than the show she had at the monastery in 2017.  “The photographs in this exhibit are much more ephemeral\, serene\, and delicate. By exploring a softer focus on what I experience in nature\, the painterly aspect of our natural world is revealed\, allowing us to see details that may go unnoticed.”  Jennifer attended Stevens College in Columbia\, Missouri where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree\, majoring in piano. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at UW-Madison. Jennifer taught French at Blackhawk Middle School for 31 years and retired in 2011. Jennifer has always taken photographs\, has exhibited throughout the area and participated in art fairs for years.  Jennifer volunteers curating the art exhibits at Holy Wisdom and several other local venues. \n  \nRegistration\nPlease register by May 28\, 2025\, in order to have enough refreshments. Thank you!

SUMMARY:Spring Solar Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 13\, 2025 | 3:00-4:30 pm\nWe are looking for 90 people to help tilt the solar panels at Holy Wisdom Monastery\nHoly Wisdom Monastery is proudly a net-zero facility\, having implemented solar energy and geothermal heating and cooling in 2024 in our Retreat & Guest House. \nYou are invited to participate in the Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on\, community event where we gather together to celebrate solar energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. Participants had so much fun last year that we decided to make it an annual event! \nWatch the video below to learn how to tilt the solar panels\n \nThe 30-panel array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals and teams from the community and local businesses are invited to be part of the 2nd annual tilt event as participants or spectators. \nJoin us as one of 90 volunteers who will help to tilt Holy Wisdom’s solar panels! Or come watch and join us in prayer for climate change. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. \nWe will begin in the Monastery Assembly Room at 3:00 pm before going outside to begin tilting. Parking space may be limited\, so bring your friends\, but please carpool if you can. Please dress for the weather. \nCost\nThere is no cost for this event unless you sign up to stay for dinner at 5:15 pm after the tilting. Since the event is ending just before dinner\, we thought some participants may want to purchase dinner at the monastery\, and enjoy a delicious meal and conversations with other tilt participants. \n$0 – Tilt participant or observer \n$22 – Tilt participant or observer plus optional dinner \nRegister\nPlease register below by May 6\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Great WI Birdathon
DESCRIPTION:The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. \nHoly Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the fifth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team ‘Wrens of Wisdom Prairie’ in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 10th. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four walking tours. Group size will be limited to 10 participants. Tour options include 6:30 am\, 8:00 am\, 10:00 am and noon. \nWe are also offering a birding ‘sit\, at 7:30 am in which we’ll make ourselves comfy on a bench or platform overlooking Lost Lake and observe activity from that spot\, with minimal walking involved. \nBirders of all ages and experience levels are welcome at all tours and sit. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 10th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. Submit your list of species to Amy Alstad\, aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x123. \nSupport Wrens of Wisdom Prairie by making a financial contribution\nAll of the dollars raised will directly support bird conservation. Half of the funds raised will stay at Holy Wisdom Monastery and be used to create and maintain bird habitat here\, with the remaining funds going to the Natural Resources Foundation.

SUMMARY:The Great Search 3
DESCRIPTION:“The Great Search gathering is a reminder of the divine hospitality that calls us into a deeper relationship with God\, with the Earth\, and with each other. Filled with a kind of reckless love\, one leaves feeling restored and committed to bringing hope and healing to all life. The combination of John Philip’s teaching\, the spiritual practices led by Cami\, and the peaceful and beautiful surroundings of Holy Wisdom Monastery offers a personal and community guide to contemplation and spiritual growth.” \n–Catherine Maciariello\, The Great Search 2\, 2024 participant \n  \nThe Great Search 3\nWe hope you can join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery for The Great Search 3 from May 1-3\, 2025. \nIn 2022 John Philip Newell began a second series of annual retreats to address the deep spiritual yearnings of this moment in time and to help give birth to new beginnings in our lives and world.  \nThe Great Search 3 is the third of a three-part series of annual retreats led by the Celtic teacher John Philip Newell and his colleague Cami Twilling in which we explore the search for wisdom\, the search for meaning\, and the search for faith. \nThe teachings of this retreat are based on John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search: Turning to Earth & Soul in the Quest for Healing & Home (especially Chapters 7\, 8\, and 9 drawing on the wisdom of Rabindranath Tagore\, Etty Hillesum\, and Edwin Muir).  \nThe text for this three-year program is John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search (August 2024). The shared prayer book for this program is Praying with the Earth. \nThe Great Search 3 can be taken as a stand-alone retreat or in conjunction with The Great Search 1 and The Great Search 2 which can be attended in any order and at any of our retreat centers across the country or online. \nFor more information about John Philip Newell\, Earth and Soul or The Great Search initiative\, visit https://www.earthandsoul.org. \nFor more information about the retreat at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, contact Pam Shellberg at pshellberg@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x126. \nSchedule\nThursday – May 1 \n\n\n\n3:00 pm\nTour of Holy Wisdom Monastery and Grounds\nGathering Area\n\n\n4:00-5:00 pm\nCheck-In/Getting Settled\nGathering Area\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nDining Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nEvening Prayer (please enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*7:15 pm\nSession 1: Introductory Presentation\nAssembly Room\n\n\n8:30 pm\nSacred Silence (until breakfast)\n\n\n\n\nFriday – May 2 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 2: Teaching I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 3: Spiritual Practice I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n1:30 pm\nSilence (Siesta/Reading/Walking)\n\n\n\n*3:30 pm\nSession 4: Spiritual Practice II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n4:45 pm\nAfternoon Break\n\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nSession 5: Teaching II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n7:30 pm\nWine & Cheese Reception & Book Signing\nGathering Area\n\n\n\nSaturday – May 3 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 6: Teaching III (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 7: Thanksgiving (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n\nLeaders – John Philip Newell and Cami Twilling\n \nJohn Philip Newell\nJohn Philip Newell is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being. \nCanadian by birth\, and also Scottish\, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book\, also with HarperOne\, is The Great Search (August 2024)\, in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.  \nNewell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher’ following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic tradition\, seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar’\, combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual\, the head as well as the heart\, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. \nCami Twilling\nCami Twilling\, based in Colorado\, is the Director of Earth & Soul (a Celtic initiative of study\, spiritual practice and compassionate action inspired by the teachings of John Philip Newell). As well as heading up the overall work of Earth & Soul\, she facilitates the spiritual practice component of the Earth & Soul Retreats. In addition to leading mountain and urban retreats\, she has led international pilgrimage groups to Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland and work teams to Guatemala to build houses in communities that have suffered from political strife and economic hardship. Cami is passionate about the relationship between spirituality and action and believes that spiritual vision and practice can play a vital role in helping to heal and transform our lives both individually and together. \nDates/Times\n4:00 pm\, Thursday\, May 1 – 1:00 pm\, Saturday\, May 3\, 2025 \nCost\n$360/person\, includes program and meals\, Thurs. dinner\, Fri. lunch and dinner\, Fri. book signing and reception\, Sat. lunch; does NOT include lodging. \nLimited scholarships are available. SUMMARY:Meditation & Prayer Through Sacred Dance
DESCRIPTION:Body movement and rhythmic dance is a natural human behavior in most of the world. Unfortunately\, not all religious leaders see it that way. A 1975 Vatican advisory\, “Dance in the Liturgy\,” acknowledged that some non-Western cultures still retain liturgical dancing and may therefore be appropriate\, but not so in the West. The union of dance and religion in the West has long been severed except within the Black church and among some white Pentecostals. \nNevertheless\, dance is a normal\, healthy human activity. In Christian and Jewish scriptures\, Miriam leads dancing to celebrate crossing the Red Sea\, King David dances in worship\, and within many Psalms\, God is praised by dancing. It is our tradition. Dancing becomes sacred when we acknowledge a higher power\, when we give thanks for our existence\, and when we understand we are all connected in and to the cosmos in which we live and have our being. \nCarla DeSola\, a pioneer and advocate of sacred dance for over 40 years\, writes\, “Dancing is like a beautiful garment\, a garment in which the Spirit moves and delights…When we dance we can recognize our own beauty…and with all creation simply be\, thus spontaneously praising God.” \nNo dance knowledge is necessary and participants will be encouraged to move as much or as little as they feel and are able. Come\, try on this beautiful garment. \nSchedule\n4:30-4:45 – Introductions\, parameters\, and stretching\n4:45-4:50 – Silencing and centering ourselves in the Benedictine tradition\n4:50-5:20 – Body movement (dancing) to the spiritual music of Hildegard of Bingen\n5:20-5:30 – Slowly “cool down” and centering ourselves before our departure \nLeader – David Couper\nDavid Couper is an Episcopal priest\, member of our Sunday Assembly and Benedictine oblate. He continues to lead an active physical and spiritual life into his later years. For many years he was a teacher of Asian martial arts where he often introduced his students to music and dance during their training. Some of you may remember him as Madison’s Chief of Police from 1972-1993. \nCost\nPlease consider a free will offering for the monastery. \nRegistration\nPlease register with the button below by Apr. 22\, 2025. \n \n
