SUMMARY:Holy Week Silent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Anyone who would like to experience a deep and sustained silence in the quiet companionship of others is invited to the Holy Week Silent Retreat. For some\, this retreat will be an opportunity to contemplate and participate in – with greater intention – the texts\, liturgies and prayers of Holy Week. For all\, it is an invitation to live the rhythms of monastic life in an extended retreat experience. SUMMARY:Poetic Contemplation and the Divinity Within
DESCRIPTION:Anchored to a conversation between carpenter-priest William Beers and philosopher poet John Koethe\, participants will explore the meanings of being human in the contemporary world. Physics\, the social sciences\, philosophy and theology provide the cultural and personal context for contemplating the imagination\, memory and mourning in the creation of meaning. \nNo experience needed\, just a willingness to stretch your knowledge\, imagination and awareness. We will inhabit the poems of John Koethe and others to deepen our contemplative awareness of the world and the divinity within. Please join us for this deep dive into modernity and modern poetry. \nIt is highly recommended that you pick up a copy of John Koethe’s thin volume of poetry\, Cemeteries and Galaxies (Farrar\, Straus\, Giroux\, 2025) in advance. It is the collection central to this conversation between John and Bill. His book\, Women and Sacrifice\, explores the gendered origins of sacred violence. For 20 years he was a fundraiser for an international Christian relief organization\, traveling throughout the United States\, the Caribbean and Latin America. \nJohn Koethe\, PhD\, has published 20 books of poetry and has received the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize\, the Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and the Frank O’Hara Award for Poetry. He has also published books on Ludwig Wittgenstein\, philosophical skepticism and poetry\, as well as the recent essay collection\, Thought and Poetry. DESCRIPTION:“It all was wonderful! Amy (Alstad) and Pam (Shellberg) put together a wonderful program that balanced contemplative time and more active time. I loved the various quotes that spurred thought and contemplation. I appreciated the camaraderie with my fellow retreatants and had some wonderful conversations. It was nice to balance alone time with time with others and always the choice to do what was right for me at the time.” \n–2025 Winter Rest participant \n  \nAs the earth rests under blankets of cold and snow\, we also need to rest. This retreat invites the season of winter to teach us to stop striving; it invites you to a time of tranquility and silence. It will open the space to consider how winter prepares us for the other seasons of our lives\, to rest in deep quietude\, to be held by the stillness of the prairie. \nConversations about the season\, walks on the prairie\, a long winter’s nap\, art\, movement\, journaling\, great meals and warm beds will all be a part of what you can expect when you arrive. A renewed connection to yourself and to nature are what you can expect to take with you when you leave. \nSeasonal Retreats\nEach season this year\, we will offer a different seasonal retreat. They will open spaces where each different season can offer its unique wisdom to us in the changing seasons of our lives. Each retreat is a two-day\, one-night experience at Holy Wisdom with cozy accommodations\, delicious meals\, spacious time periods for solitude\, reading and rest and contemplative conversations with other retreatants. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. DESCRIPTION:Prayer is a pillar of Benedictine life\, an essential in the spiritual life and a principal theme of Jesus’ life. But in our own lives\, prayer can be a source of confusion\, insecurity and also a little bit of a mystery. In Luke’s gospel\, Jesus’ disciples say to him\, “teach us to pray.” Maybe you would like to say the same thing. Maybe the word prayer itself has become more of a stumbling block for you than an invitation to be present in and with God. Come to this series and listen to what Jesus says about prayer\, see how he prays and what he shows us about prayer. Listen to what others say about their own experiences with prayer and contemplation. In Luke’s gospel\, Jesus’ disciples say to him\, “teach us to pray.” Maybe you would like to say the same thing. Maybe the word prayer itself has become more of a stumbling block for you than an invitation to be present in and with God. Come to this series and listen to what Jesus says about prayer\, see how he prays and what he shows us about prayer. Listen to what others say about their own experiences with prayer and contemplation.
