SUMMARY:Forest Bathing Art Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Japanese practice of Forest Bathing\, or shinrin-yoku\, is becoming a prevalent way for people to increase their well-being by connecting with the natural environment through their senses. This easily accessible activity can benefit all ages\, and serves as a reminder to slow down and be mindful by simply immersing oneself in the sights\, sounds\, and smells of nature. \nIn Holy Wisdom’s new art exhibit\, local artists Jennifer Peters and Annette Knapstein share their work inspired by Forest Bathing as a “tangible expression of our sensory experience in nature.” Please join us for the Forest Bathing Art Exhibit Reception on Friday\, May 30\, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception begins | light refreshments will be served\n6:30 pm – Artists give brief talk about their work and invite questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nThe exhibit is on display in the Gathering Area of the monastery from May 21 – July 21\, 2025.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday 10:00 – 11:00 am. \nArtists – Annette Knapstein and Jennifer Peters\n \n“My family always encouraged creativity whether it was in music\, art or any other endeavor.” \nAnnette Knapstein grew up in Oregon\, Wisconsin\, and now lives in Middleton. Annette earned a degree in Economics and worked in advertising and marketing for more than 30 years. “I definitely used my love for the visual arts in my career\,” she laughed. Initially a photographer\, Annette began exploring colored pencils\, watercolors\, and acrylic painting several years ago. “My work is based on my impression of what I see\, rather than making an exact replica. My intention is to reflect how I feel about what I am experiencing and seeing.”  During COVID\, Annette spent a lot of time at Pheasant Branch Conservancy. “Being out in nature gave so much back to me – it was my safe refuge.” \n  \n  \n \n  \nJennifer Peters\, an expressionist photographer\, said her work in this exhibit is quite different than the show she had at the monastery in 2017.  “The photographs in this exhibit are much more ephemeral\, serene\, and delicate. By exploring a softer focus on what I experience in nature\, the painterly aspect of our natural world is revealed\, allowing us to see details that may go unnoticed.”  Jennifer attended Stevens College in Columbia\, Missouri where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree\, majoring in piano. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at UW-Madison. Jennifer taught French at Blackhawk Middle School for 31 years and retired in 2011. Jennifer has always taken photographs\, has exhibited throughout the area and participated in art fairs for years.  Jennifer volunteers curating the art exhibits at Holy Wisdom and several other local venues. \n  \nRegistration\nPlease register by May 28\, 2025\, in order to have enough refreshments. SUMMARY:The Infinite Affect of Time on Clouds: Never in Reruns Art Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of The Infinite Affect of Time on Clouds: Never in Reruns\, the newest art exhibit at Holy Wisdom Monastery featuring the photographs of Mark Weller. Mark explores how time influences what we see – especially clouds. Through his process of taking up to 100 exposures of the same site\, separated by several second intervals\, and then ‘stacking’ the images into a single frame\, Mark offers an alternative perspective on our Midwest landscapes. \nThe exhibit is on display in the Gathering Area of the monastery building from February 13 – May 15\, 2025. Gallery hours\, Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday 10:00 – 11:00 am. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception begins with light refreshments\n6:30 pm – Mark Weller will give a brief talk about his work and answer questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nArtist – Mark Weller\nOriginally from Manitowoc\, Wisconsin\, Mark Weller attended the UW – Milwaukee and earned a degree in Mass Communications. He began his career as a documentary filmmaker in Alaska\, and by 1980 he had moved to Madison where he served as the senior producer of news and documentaries for PBS Wisconsin. During his time with PBS\, he produced award-winning films and live broadcasts featuring international leaders such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama\, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, and President Bill Clinton. In 1992\, Mark joined a telecom company and became their President and CEO. \nMark had dabbled in photography throughout his careers\, and when he retired in 2019\, he went full-time into his work at a lens-based artist. HIs method of layering photographs\, captures and accentuates movement\, resulting in bold shapes and distinctive surprises. While traditional photography generally captures three dimensions\, his images explore the fourth dimension: time. The results are creations that go beyond the customary landscape. \nIn the last five years\, Mark’s award-winning work has been exhibited in more than 180 art galleries and museums in the US and internationally and his prints are included in many private\, corporate and government collections. \nCost\nThere is no cost to participants to attend the opening reception and art exhibit. \nRegister\nPlease register with the button below so we know how many people to expect. \n \n

SUMMARY:Inspired Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:Reception\nJoin us for a reception for the Inspired Art exhibit featuring artists Jennifer Peters (photography)\, Francine Tompkins (acrylic painting) and Jennifer Angelo (fiber art) on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Please register below. \nArt Exhibit\nJennifer Peters had an idea about creating an exhibit with artists working in different mediums and how they could blend their individual work into a unified show happening Feb. 2 – Apr. 28\, 2024 at Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nEach artist created three inspiration pieces and the other two then worked in their own medium\, interpreting the original work of art. The result is the new exhibit\, Inspired Art\, which includes 27 works of art grouped into nine distinct sets sharing their inspiration from a common source. \nGallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday\, 10:00-11:00 am. \nRegister
