One that brings people together\, celebrates creativity\, and weaves a kind of magic that sparks your imagination and strengthens our sense of community. \nCome for the music and stories… stay for the magic! \nSchedule\n1:30 pm – Doors open\n2:00 pm – Monastic Monologues begins\n3:30 pm – Reception and “After Glow” \nStorytellers\, Musicians & Emcee\n \nJane Barnard is a Madison-based writer\, visual artist and watercolor teacher. She’s reading from her memoir-in-progress\, entitled ” Poetry as Pain Relief\,” about her spiritual journey of surviving dark times with beauty\, with humor and grace. She celebrates the artists who have seeped into her bones\, to soothe her loneliness and bring her joy. \n  \nYou can learn more about Jane at her website. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAnn Baltes (right) and Bill Rosholt (left) are members of Sunday Assembly and have cherished being\nconnected to this beloved community of communities over many years\, musically and\notherwise. They also consider it an extraordinary gift to have raised their daughter\,\nGrace\, at Holy Wisdom as an ecumenical Benedictine. Ann has a background serving in\nparishes and other settings in the areas of pastoral care\, adult and youth faith formation\,\nliturgical music\, and retreat facilitation. Bill works as a Systems Development Test\nEngineer for Exact Sciences in Madison. Ann and Bill met as undergrads studying voice\nand singing in choirs at Luther College in Decorah\, Iowa. They are both choral music\nenthusiasts having sung continuously since high school students in various choirs in\nIowa\, Pennsylvania\, Illinois\, and Wisconsin. They have sung regularly in Madison and\nsurrounding areas as both choral artists and soloists with the Isthmus Vocal Ensemble\,\nWisconsin Chamber Choir\, Madison Choral Project\, Cheers Madison\, and Madison\nSavoyards \nJean Feraca’s favorite 2024 Christmas gift is a coffee cup from an anonymous donor that reads\, “I am Kind of a Big Deal in Wisconsin.” Famous as a talk show host on Wisconsin Public Radio\, Jean was a writer before she became a broadcaster. The award-winning author of three books of poetry and the memoir\, I Hear Voices: a Memoir of Love\, Death\, and the Radio\, Jean teaches in UW-Odyssey\, the humanities program she co-founded\, and in Wisconsin prisons with the Prison Ministry Project. \nJean is a Sunday Assembly member\, Benedictine Oblate since 2016\, and one of the Monastic Monologues presenters. Jean’s a beloved voice of Wisconsin Public Radio and a true original. For 28 years\, Jean was the host and producer on WPR’s Ideas Network\, best known for the award-winning program Here on Earth: Radio Without Borders. Her work has beautifully blended humanities\, poetry\, curiosity\, and community\, making her one of the most respected and recognizable figures in public radio. She joined WPR in 1983 as a humanities producer and went on to host some of the network’s most memorable shows. Jean’s award-winning series\, “Women of Spirit” was developed with the help of the Benedictine Sisters here at Holy Wisdom. \nBut what really makes Jean shine is her warmth\, wit\, and ability to laugh at herself. When asked about her funniest moments on air\, she didn’t hesitate to share a few gems from her broadcasting life. There was the day she opened her own show with\, “Good morning\, I’m Jean Ferrara\,” accidentally mispronouncing her own name. Or the time she invited her big brother on as a guest—“big mistake\,” she laughs—only to have him greet her on air with\, “You already made a mistake!” And then there’s the moment she’ll never quite live down: introducing “Wisconsin’s most famous baseball player… Brett Favre!” \nJoin us for a performance by Jean Feraca during Monastic Monologues and enjoy stories\, humor\, and insight from a master storyteller whose voice—and laughter—have been part of Wisconsin’s cultural fabric for decades. \n  \n \nBill Frederick is the Director of Worship and Music at Holy Wisdom Monastery. He studied voice at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville while earning a Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Gerald Darrow. He has been leading music and liturgy in various Churches full-time over the past 40 years. 33 years ago\, Bill and Steve Johnson founded “Enter the Season With Song\,” a group of musicians who gather for Christmas and summer concerts. The group has recorded three CDs and has given every dollar raised from every concert\, a total exceeding $250\,000\, to various charities. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMax Harris earned his B.A. in English from Cambridge University and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. Over the years\, he’s taught in a range of fields—from Latin American Studies to Psychiatry at the University of Virginia\, and Religion and Literature at Yale Divinity School. He’s also written six books\, including Carnival and Other Christian Festivals (University of Texas Press) and Sacred Folly: A New History of the Feast of Fools (Cornell University Press). \nBeyond academia\, Max has pastored Presbyterian churches in England\, Virginia\, Maryland\, and Wisconsin. But if you ask him what really matters\, he’ll tell you it’s not the titles or the books—it’s his 52-year (and counting!) marriage to Ann\, and the gracious\, saving work of the Holy Spirit that continues to shape their life together. \n  \n  \nSteve Johnson is the Director of Music Ministry at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Madison. He has worked for the past 30+ years in various churches as Director of Liturgy and Music. Steve studied voice and piano at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while earning a degree in k-12 music education. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTerry Larson is a previous Protestant pastor who prefers poetry\, pollinator plants\, preaching\, progressive people\, polite politicians\, pithy plots\, pleasing prairies\, plentiful portions of produce and…alliteration. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJanet Neurauter’s first time on stage was as a reindeer in her 2nd-grade holiday pageant and was actively involved in theater throughout school and with the Nicolet Players in Rhinelander\, WI. She enjoys writing short stories and monologues and is working on her second play. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nOriginally from Michigan\, Bill Santer II has called Wisconsin home since 1987. With a background in marketing\, education and the arts\, he now enjoys helping people find their perfect home as a realtor. At Sunday Assembly\, Bill feels fortunate to be part of a welcoming\, earth-conscious community that celebrates kindness\, open-minded conversation and shared purpose. Whether he’s helping someone settle into a new home\, concert-going\, telling stories or connecting with his community\, Bill brings a genuine spirit of curiosity\, care and joy to everything he does. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSusan Santner is a passionate and versatile storyteller who loves to bring stories to life. She’s shared her tales at festivals\, schools\, libraries and community events across the region\, captivating audiences of all ages. With experience as an actress\, theatre director\, puppeteer and library director\, Susan’s creativity shines through in every performance. Her storytelling is lively\, imaginative and full of heart\, inviting listeners to step right into the world of her stories. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGeorge Teague is a Madison-based cellist and teacher. He maintains an active studio at home and at UW-Steven’s Point. SUMMARY:Spring Solar Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 13\, 2025 | 3:00-4:30 pm\nWe are looking for 90 people to help tilt the solar panels at Holy Wisdom Monastery\nHoly Wisdom Monastery is proudly a net-zero facility\, having implemented solar energy and geothermal heating and cooling in 2024 in our Retreat & Guest House. \nYou are invited to participate in the Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on\, community event where we gather together to celebrate solar energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. Participants had so much fun last year that we decided to make it an annual event! \nWatch the video below to learn how to tilt the solar panels\n \nThe 30-panel array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals and teams from the community and local businesses are invited to be part of the 2nd annual tilt event as participants or spectators. \nJoin us as one of 90 volunteers who will help to tilt Holy Wisdom’s solar panels! Or come watch and join us in prayer for climate change. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. \nWe will begin in the Monastery Assembly Room at 3:00 pm before going outside to begin tilting. Parking space may be limited\, so bring your friends\, but please carpool if you can. Please dress for the weather. \nCost\nThere is no cost for this event unless you sign up to stay for dinner at 5:15 pm after the tilting. Since the event is ending just before dinner\, we thought some participants may want to purchase dinner at the monastery\, and enjoy a delicious meal and conversations with other tilt participants. \n$0 – Tilt participant or observer \n$22 – Tilt participant or observer plus optional dinner \nRegister\nPlease register below by May 6\, 2025.

SUMMARY:The Great Search 3
DESCRIPTION:“The Great Search gathering is a reminder of the divine hospitality that calls us into a deeper relationship with God\, with the Earth\, and with each other. Filled with a kind of reckless love\, one leaves feeling restored and committed to bringing hope and healing to all life. The combination of John Philip’s teaching\, the spiritual practices led by Cami\, and the peaceful and beautiful surroundings of Holy Wisdom Monastery offers a personal and community guide to contemplation and spiritual growth.” \n–Catherine Maciariello\, The Great Search 2\, 2024 participant \n  \nThe Great Search 3\nWe hope you can join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery for The Great Search 3 from May 1-3\, 2025. \nIn 2022 John Philip Newell began a second series of annual retreats to address the deep spiritual yearnings of this moment in time and to help give birth to new beginnings in our lives and world.  \nThe Great Search 3 is the third of a three-part series of annual retreats led by the Celtic teacher John Philip Newell and his colleague Cami Twilling in which we explore the search for wisdom\, the search for meaning\, and the search for faith. \nThe teachings of this retreat are based on John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search: Turning to Earth & Soul in the Quest for Healing & Home (especially Chapters 7\, 8\, and 9 drawing on the wisdom of Rabindranath Tagore\, Etty Hillesum\, and Edwin Muir).  \nThe text for this three-year program is John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search (August 2024). The shared prayer book for this program is Praying with the Earth. \nThe Great Search 3 can be taken as a stand-alone retreat or in conjunction with The Great Search 1 and The Great Search 2 which can be attended in any order and at any of our retreat centers across the country or online. \nFor more information about John Philip Newell\, Earth and Soul or The Great Search initiative\, visit https://www.earthandsoul.org. \nFor more information about the retreat at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, contact Pam Shellberg at pshellberg@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x126. \nSchedule\nThursday – May 1 \n\n\n\n3:00 pm\nTour of Holy Wisdom Monastery and Grounds\nGathering Area\n\n\n4:00-5:00 pm\nCheck-In/Getting Settled\nGathering Area\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nDining Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nEvening Prayer (please enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*7:15 pm\nSession 1: Introductory Presentation\nAssembly Room\n\n\n8:30 pm\nSacred Silence (until breakfast)\n\n\n\n\nFriday – May 2 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 2: Teaching I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 3: Spiritual Practice I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n1:30 pm\nSilence (Siesta/Reading/Walking)\n\n\n\n*3:30 pm\nSession 4: Spiritual Practice II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n4:45 pm\nAfternoon Break\n\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nSession 5: Teaching II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n7:30 pm\nWine & Cheese Reception & Book Signing\nGathering Area\n\n\n\nSaturday – May 3 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 6: Teaching III (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 7: Thanksgiving (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n\nLeaders – John Philip Newell and Cami Twilling\n \nJohn Philip Newell\nJohn Philip Newell is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being. \nCanadian by birth\, and also Scottish\, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book\, also with HarperOne\, is The Great Search (August 2024)\, in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.  \nNewell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher’ following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic tradition\, seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar’\, combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual\, the head as well as the heart\, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. \nCami Twilling\nCami Twilling\, based in Colorado\, is the Director of Earth & Soul (a Celtic initiative of study\, spiritual practice and compassionate action inspired by the teachings of John Philip Newell). SUMMARY:The Quest for Healing and Home – The Great Search 2
DESCRIPTION:The Quest for Healing and Home – The Great Search 2\nWe hope you can join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery for The Quest for Healing and Home – The Great Search 2 from May 9-11\, 2024. \nIn 2022 John Philip Newell began a second series of annual retreats to address the deep spiritual yearnings of this moment in time and to help give birth to new beginnings in our lives and world.  \nThe Great Search 2 is the second of a three-part series of annual retreats led by the Celtic teacher John Philip Newell and his colleague Cami Twilling in which we explore the search for awareness\, the search for spiritual and physical wellness and the search for love. \nThe teachings of this retreat are based on John’s forthcoming book The Great Search: Turning to Earth and Soul in the Quest for Healing and Home\, especially Chapters 4\, 5\, and 6\, drawing on the wisdom of Carl Jung\, Julian of Norwich and Jelalludin Rumi. Until the book is published\, The Rebirthing of God is the recommended reading and Praying with the Earth is the shared prayer book for this retreat. \nThe Great Search 2 can be taken as a stand-alone retreat or in conjunction with The Great Search 1 and The Great Search 3 which can be attended in any order and at any of the participating retreat centers across the country or online. \nSchedule\nThursday \n\n\n\n4:00-5:00 pm\nCheck-in/Getting Settled\n\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nMonastery Guest Dining Room\n\n\n6:30 pm\nEvening Prayer (please enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n7:15 pm\nSession 1: Introductory Presentation\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n8:30 pm\nSacred Silence (until breakfast)\n\n\n\n\nFriday \n\n\n\n7:00-8:30 am\nBreakfast (continental for those staying at Holy Wisdom Monastery)\nRetreat & Guest House (RGH) Dining Room\n\n\n8:45 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n9:15 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n9:30 am\nSession 2: Teaching I (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n10:30 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n10:45 am\nSession 3: Spiritual Practice I (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nMonastery Guest Dining Room\n\n\n1:30 pm\nSilence (siesta/reading/walking)\n\n\n\n3:30 pm\nSession 4: Spiritual Practice II (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n4:45 pm\nAfternoon Break\n\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nMonastery Guest Dining Room\n\n\n6:30 pm\nSession 5: Teaching II (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n7:30 pm\nWine & Cheese Reception and Book Signing\nMonastery Gathering Area\n\n\n\nSaturday \n\n\n\n7:00-8:30 am\nBreakfast (continental for those staying at Holy Wisdom Monastery)\nRGH Dining Room\n\n\n8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n9:15 am\nSession 6: Teaching III (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n10:45 am\nSession 7: Thanksgiving (enter in silence)\nMonastery Assembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nMonastery Guest Dining Room\n\n\n\nDates/Times\n4:00 pm\, May 9 – 1:00 pm May 11\, 2024 \nCost\n$340/person\, includes program and meals\, Thurs. dinner\, Fri. lunch and dinner\, Fri. book signing and reception\, Sat. lunch; does NOT include lodging. \nLimited scholarships are available. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his latest award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His forthcoming book (August 2024)\, also with Harper One\, is The Great Search\, in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it. \nCami Twilling\, based in Colorado\, is the Director of Earth & Soul (a Celtic initiative of study\, spiritual practice and compassionate action inspired by the teachings of John Philip Newell). As well as heading up the overall work of Earth & Soul\, she facilitates the spiritual practice component of the Earth & Soul Annual Retreats. In addition to leading mountain and urban retreats\, she has led international pilgrimage groups to Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland and work teams to Guatemala to build houses in communities that have suffered from political strife and economic hardship. SUMMARY:Go Without Hesitation: Lent Series (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Go Without Hesitation: Lent Series with Pam Shellberg (online)\nThis online series is full. There is still room in the in-person series on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 am. Register below. \nJoin us for a 5-week study of a gripping tale from the New Testament book of Acts where Peter\, Jesus’ disciple\, and Cornelius\, a Roman centurion\, present us with a historical diorama of conflicts mirroring back to us how perceiving God’s will and knowing how to respond is rarely straightforward. \nThe story guides us in the ways of discerning God’s purposes\, asking us to bravely sit with questions we might have about God’s purposes and our faith commitments in the midst of change and transition. \nIt marks out ways that we can\, together\, discern truth in our doubts and confusions and hear God’s wisdom in our more vulnerable times. The Spirit directs Peter – and us – to go without hesitation! And so\, we will go\, unhesitatingly\, to live and love in the power and promise of the Holy One. \nWe’ll meet one time per week (Tuesday mornings in-person or Wednesday evenings via Zoom). The sessions will be part study\, part small group sharing and reflection and part lectio divina and contemplation. \nSchedule\n\n6:30 – 8:00 pm for the virtual session on Wednesday nights via Zoom\n\nLeader\nPam Shellberg is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She is presenting this event because: \n\nIt is a good story for times of change and transition when God’s purposes are not so clear and when doubts\, confusions\, vulnerabilities cast shadows across one’s faith commitments.\nBible study is part of the balance of Benedictine life.\nLent is a season of preparation for new life in Christ\, and it is well for us to turn to sacred texts to examine the unexpected paths to that new life\, challenges and demands.\nPam has been an assistant professor of New Testament and eager share from her learning and experience.\n\nDates/times\n\nWednesdays\, 6:30-8:00 pm on Zoom\nFeb. 21\, 28; March 6\, 13\, 20\n\nCost\n$25/person \nRegister\nPlease register by Wed.\, Feb. 14\, 2024. The capacity for this series is 40 people and registration will close when we reach 40 people. There is no refund for cancellations. \nRegister for the in-person (Tuesdays\, 10:00-11:30 am) series below. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Inspired Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:Reception\nJoin us for a reception for the Inspired Art exhibit featuring artists Jennifer Peters (photography)\, Francine Tompkins (acrylic painting) and Jennifer Angelo (fiber art) on Friday\, Feb. 9 from 6:00-8:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. Please register below. \nArt Exhibit\nJennifer Peters had an idea about creating an exhibit with artists working in different mediums and how they could blend their individual work into a unified show happening Feb. 2 – Apr. 28\, 2024 at Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nEach artist created three inspiration pieces and the other two then worked in their own medium\, interpreting the original work of art. The result is the new exhibit\, Inspired Art\, which includes 27 works of art grouped into nine distinct sets sharing their inspiration from a common source. \nGallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday\, 10:00-11:00 am. \nRegister
