DESCRIPTION:Grounded: Ten Million Four Hundred Thousand Steps Through Grief to Healing\nYou are invited to attend the opening reception of Grounded: Ten Million Four Hundred Thousand Steps Through Grief to Healing – the newest art exhibit at Holy Wisdom Monastery featuring the photographs of Carolyn S. Knorr. Light refreshments will be served.  \nAll the photos in this exhibit were taken within a ten-mile radius of her home in Middleton. Through her photos of prairies\, oak savannas and wetlands\, Carolyn explores the cycles of change\, the intricacies of balance\, and the essence of resilience. \nSchedule \n6:00 pm – Reception begins with light refreshments\n6:30 pm – Carolyn Knorr will give a brief talk about her work and answer questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nArtist – Carolyn Knorr\nCarolyn grew up in Wisconsin and earned a BS in Landscape Architecture from UW-Madison in 1991. While working in that field\, Carolyn continued to explore her artistic side through photography and painting. In 2021\, Carolyn began the Master of Fine Arts program at Maine Media College in Rockport\, Maine\, and completed the program in November of 2024. The exhibit’s title\, which is also the title of her master’s thesis\, is in honor and remembrance of her sister who passed away from cancer in 2014. “It is the approximate number of steps I have walked grieving the loss of my sister.” In addition to receiving many awards\, Carolyn has had numerous solo\, juried\, group and collaborative exhibits both nationally and internationally. \nExhibit\nGrounded: Ten Million Four Hundred Thousand Steps Through Grief to Healing is on display in the gathering area of the monastery building from November 23\, 2024\, through February 10\, 2025. DESCRIPTION:The Advent season returns us to the incarnation of the Christ-spirit and its power to restore us in hope and renew us in purpose. This series takes its starting point from the Gospel of Luke where Jesus says he has come “to seek and to save the lost.” Sometimes the language of saving doesn’t always set easily with us. Nor does the suggestion that we are somehow lost! DESCRIPTION:Holy Wisdom Monastery is partnering with Dane County Parks to host another Women’s* Restoration Workday on Thursday\, Nov. 14\, 2024\, from 1:00-3:30 pm! \nWhy a Women’s* Workday? \n*It can often be hard for women\, folks who are non-binary/transgender\, and other gender minorities to feel comfortable using chainsaws and brush cutters in a typical restoration workday environment. These workdays are meant to create space for such folks who would benefit from this event and to build community in Dane County. We welcome any level sawyer and folks interested in equipment operation. Not interested in operating a chainsaw? Perfect! We also need brush haulers and folks interested in using a parsnip predator to go after invasive weeds. \nVolunteers should wear boots or other closed toed shoes\, and dress and be ready to work in most weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Stability\nYou are invited to attend Conversations about Our Benedictine Life – Stability\, starting in September 2024. These events will provide opportunities to talk with others about the value of stability and to learn a bit about stability as a feature of Benedictine spirituality. Each gathering will be a time to share reflections on our ideas\, experiences\, and beliefs about stability\, Benedict’s teachings\, and what spiritual gifts are to be discovered in a life where a practice of stability is central. \nThe gatherings will be between 60 and 90 minutes in length. DESCRIPTION:An anniversary is a wonderful time to revisit all that has brought the community to this moment\, celebrate all the gifts this community offers to the world today\, and to listen anew to what the oblates of Holy Wisdom are called to be as we lean into the future. This retreat will include time to tell the stories of the community’s founding and its history\, time to consider how the times have changed over this quarter century and discerning what the world today is asking of us\, and time to simply celebrate and have a good time with each other! \nThe retreat will begin on Friday night in conversation with Sister Lynne Smith\, executive director Erin Trondson\, and board member/oblate Roberta Felker who will draw out their visions and dreams for Holy Wisdom Monastery and what is needed to make dreams a reality – and the special role of the oblate community in making it so. A panel of oblates from classes across the 25 years will reflect on their experiences in the community and how they practice their oblations in the world. A time will be set aside for visioning and integration. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying lengths through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nAll tours will depart from front doors\, and last approximately 75 minutes (flexible\, depending on conditions and group interest). \nTour guides\nAmy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to attend the opening reception of Enchanting Eyes – the newest art exhibit at Holy Wisdom Monastery featuring the work of Karen Nell McKean. Light refreshments will be served. \nKaren is an award-winning oil painter whose work varies from impressionistic landscapes to magical images that emerge from her dreams and imagination. Karen was one of the founders of the Ovens of Brittany Restaurant in Madison\, WI and 3 of the 4 paintings that she created for the restaurant will be on display. Each of those paintings are over 5 feet tall. \nSchedule \n6:00 pm – Reception begins with light refreshments\n6:45 pm – Karen Nell McKean will give a brief talk about her work and answer questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nArtist\nKaren has been artistic from an early age – she said kindergarten! Her parents were very supportive and provided instructors and mentors throughout her childhood. She has been involved in art for her entire life\, received many awards\, is a member of the Wisconsin Regional Art Association and participant in the\nWisconsin Regional Artists Program. Her original work is on permanent display at Epic Systems Software\, US Health Eastpark Medical Center and Four Winds Farm in Fitchburg. \nExhibit\nEnchanting Eyes is on display in the gathering area of the monastery building from September 18 through November 20\, 2024. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday\, 10:00 – 11:00 am. \nRegister\nWe hope you are able to attend the reception and view Enchanting Eyes. Please encourage your friends and family to come\, all are welcome! \nAll proceeds will go to support the mission and work of the monastery. \nPlease plan to join us and enjoy our wonderful community on a summer evening. \nCost\nDue to overwhelming interest\, we are sold out of sandwiches from the grill. Please consider still joining us on August 8th and bring your own picnic or carry-in food. Register below to help us plan for your attendance. We are so grateful for your support.
