SUMMARY:Winter Rest: A Seasonal Retreat
DESCRIPTION:As the earth rests under blankets of cold and snow\, we also need to rest. \nThis retreat invites the season of winter to teach us to stop striving; it invites you to a time of tranquility and silence. It will open the space to consider how winter prepares us for the other seasons of our lives\, to rest in deep quietude\, to be held by the stillness of the prairie. \nConversations about the season\, walks on the prairie\, a long winter’s nap\, art\, movement\, journaling\, great meals and warm beds will all be a part of what you can expect when you arrive. A renewed connection to yourself and to nature is what you can expect to take with you when you leave. \nFacilitated by Amy Alstad and Pam Shellberg \nDates & Times\nJanuary 10-11\, 2025\nArrive between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm on January 10th to check into your room. The retreat will conclude at 4:00 pm on Saturday\, January 11th. \nCost\n$245/person\n$200/person early bird special if you register by Nov. 29\, 2024 \nThe cost of the retreat includes program\, meals (Friday dinner\, Saturday breakfast and Saturday lunch) and overnight room. \nRegister\nThe retreat is full. If you are interested in joining our waiting list\, please contact Pam Shellberg at pshellberg@holywisdommonastery.org. \nCancellation policy – If you register but must cancel your registration\, you may receive a 75% refund up until Dec. 29th. After that\, a 50% refund is available. \nSeasonal Retreats\nThree more seasonal retreats will be offered in 2025. Like Winter Rest\, they will open spaces where each different season can offer its unique wisdom to us in the changing seasons of our lives. Each retreat is a two-day\, one-night experience at Holy Wisdom with cozy accommodations\, delicious meals\, spacious time periods for solitude\, reading and rest and contemplative conversations with other retreatants. Consider joining us for Wisdom Prairie Workdays and volunteer in the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands at Holy Wisdom Monastery to sustain your spirit and the land. Activities shift seasonally\, with common projects including invasive species removal and seed collecting. \n2024 Wisdom Prairie Workdays\nVolunteer workdays take place year-round on Wednesdays from 9:00-11:30 am. Meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery building parking lot. We could always use your help monitoring trail conditions! \nGoals for our trail monitoring program include: \n\nEarly detection of trail issues\nCollecting data on number of trail users\nDiversifying opportunities for volunteers\n\nProtocol for trail monitoring is simple: \nWalk a section – or two or all – of the Holy Wisdom trails and report what you encounter using a simple online form. For now\, this is a purely a monitoring program. DESCRIPTION:Grounded: Ten Million Four Hundred Thousand Steps Through Grief to Healing\nYou are invited to attend the opening reception of Grounded: Ten Million Four Hundred Thousand Steps Through Grief to Healing – the newest art exhibit at Holy Wisdom Monastery featuring the photographs of Carolyn S. Knorr. Light refreshments will be served.  \nAll the photos in this exhibit were taken within a ten-mile radius of her home in Middleton. Through her photos of prairies\, oak savannas and wetlands\, Carolyn explores the cycles of change\, the intricacies of balance\, and the essence of resilience. \nSchedule \n6:00 pm – Reception begins with light refreshments\n6:30 pm – Carolyn Knorr will give a brief talk about her work and answer questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nArtist – Carolyn Knorr\nCarolyn grew up in Wisconsin and earned a BS in Landscape Architecture from UW-Madison in 1991. While working in that field\, Carolyn continued to explore her artistic side through photography and painting. In 2021\, Carolyn began the Master of Fine Arts program at Maine Media College in Rockport\, Maine\, and completed the program in November of 2024. These workdays are meant to create space for such folks who would benefit from this event and to build community in Dane County. We welcome any level sawyer and folks interested in equipment operation. Not interested in operating a chainsaw? Perfect! We also need brush haulers and folks interested in using a parsnip predator to go after invasive weeds. \nVolunteers should wear boots or other closed toed shoes\, and dress and be ready to work in most weather conditions. This retreat will include time to tell the stories of the community’s founding and its history\, time to consider how the times have changed over this quarter century and discerning what the world today is asking of us\, and time to simply celebrate and have a good time with each other! \nThe retreat will begin on Friday night in conversation with Sister Lynne Smith\, executive director Erin Trondson\, and board member/oblate Roberta Felker who will draw out their visions and dreams for Holy Wisdom Monastery and what is needed to make dreams a reality – and the special role of the oblate community in making it so. A panel of oblates from classes across the 25 years will reflect on their experiences in the community and how they practice their oblations in the world. A time will be set aside for visioning and integration. SUMMARY:Wisdom Prairie Fall Tour
DESCRIPTION:Experience the seasonal beauty of Wisdom Prairie by coming out to explore the autumn landscape. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying lengths through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nAll tours will depart from front doors\, and last approximately 75 minutes (flexible\, depending on conditions and group interest). \nTour guides\nAmy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She has a PhD in prairie ecology from UW Madison\, almost a decade of professional experience in the field of restoration ecology\, and a deep-rooted family tradition of restoring and tending prairies that spans four generations. \nAmy will be joined by several experienced tour guides from Friends of Wisdom Prairie. \nRegister\nPlease register below to let us know how many tour guides we’ll need.
