This free event is open to members of Holy Wisdom communities and the general public. \nJune 23 – Butterflies & Berries  \nWe will search the prairie for butterflies. Our monarch expert will show us some monarch eggs. We will use magnifiers to find interesting insects on prairie plants. Then we’ll explore the woods to find seasonal berries and learn who eats them.

DESCRIPTION:Great Wisconsin Birdathon\nThe Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. \nHoly Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the fourth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team Wrens of Wisdom Prairie in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 11th\, 2024. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four walking tours. Group size will be limited to 10 participants. Tour options include 6:30am\, 8:00am\, 10:00am and noon. Birders of all ages and experience levels are welcome\, and the 10:00am tour will be specifically geared towards families. This year\, we are also offering a birding ‘sit\, at 7:30am in which we’ll make ourselves comfy on a bench or platform overlooking Lost Lake and observe activity from that spot\, with minimal walking involved. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 11th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his latest award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His forthcoming book (August 2024)\, also with Harper One\, is The Great Search\, in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.  \nNewell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher’ following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic tradition\, seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar’\, combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual\, the head as well as the heart\, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. \nCami Twilling\, based in Colorado\, is the Director of Earth & Soul (a Celtic initiative of study\, spiritual practice and compassionate action inspired by the teachings of John Philip Newell). As well as heading up the overall work of Earth & Soul\, she facilitates the spiritual practice component of the Earth & Soul Annual Retreats. In addition to leading mountain and urban retreats\, she has led international pilgrimage groups to Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland and work teams to Guatemala to build houses in communities that have suffered from political strife and economic hardship. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying length through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. Guides will share our story of caring for the earth and help participants deepen their relationship with this land. All are welcome. Must be able to safely navigate spring trails. She has a PhD in prairie ecology from UW Madison\, almost a decade of professional experience in the field of restoration ecology\, and a deep-rooted family tradition of restoring and tending prairies that spans four generations. DESCRIPTION:Be the first to tilt the new solar panels\nHoly Wisdom Monastery is on track to become a fully net-zero energy campus by the end of 2024. \nYou are invited to participate in the Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on\, inaugural community event where we gather together to celebrate solar energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. \nThe 30-panel array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals and teams from the community and local businesses are invited to be part of the inaugural tilt event as participants or spectators. \nJoin us as one of 90 volunteers who will be the first to tilt Holy Wisdom’s solar panels! Or come watch and join us in prayer for climate change. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. \nWe will begin in the Monastery Assembly Room at 1:15 pm before going outside to begin the Tilt. In case of heavy rain or storms\, the event will be moved to Monday\, April 22nd. DESCRIPTION:Go Without Hesitation: Lent Series with Pam Shellberg (online)\nThis online series is full. There is still room in the in-person series on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 am. Register below. \nJoin us for a 5-week study of a gripping tale from the New Testament book of Acts where Peter\, Jesus’ disciple\, and Cornelius\, a Roman centurion\, present us with a historical diorama of conflicts mirroring back to us how perceiving God’s will and knowing how to respond is rarely straightforward. \nThe story guides us in the ways of discerning God’s purposes\, asking us to bravely sit with questions we might have about God’s purposes and our faith commitments in the midst of change and transition. \nIt marks out ways that we can\, together\, discern truth in our doubts and confusions and hear God’s wisdom in our more vulnerable times. The Spirit directs Peter – and us – to go without hesitation! And so\, we will go\, unhesitatingly\, to live and love in the power and promise of the Holy One. \nWe’ll meet one time per week (Tuesday mornings in-person or Wednesday evenings via Zoom). The sessions will be part study\, part small group sharing and reflection and part lectio divina and contemplation. \nSchedule\n\n6:30 – 8:00 pm for the virtual session on Wednesday nights via Zoom\n\nLeader\nPam Shellberg is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom Monastery. DESCRIPTION:Build community\nCome to the first Young Adult Group Hangout of the year on February 27\, 2024. Participants can expect a mix of engaging discussions\, activities and moments of reflection as we come together to share our experiences and support one another on our respective paths. In addition\, we are always accepting new members\, so please share this opportunity with young adults you know. \nIn an age where the hustle and bustle of daily life can be overwhelming\, finding a space for community is invaluable. Holy Wisdom Monastery\, a beacon of Benedictine spirituality and contemplative living\, has been fostering a sense of connection among young adults through its new Young Adult Group. Throughout 2023\, the group organized a potluck\, 11 hangouts and a memorable retreat\, providing a haven for community building and spiritual exploration. \nSchedule\n5:50 pm – Arrive (if you have to arrive a bit later\, that’s okay)6:00 pm – Dinner is served\n7:00 pm – Contemplative conversation questions (use suggested questions or bring your own).     > What is something new you want to do this year?     > How has your life changed OR how have you changed as a person since last year?\nLocation\nWe will meet at the monastery building gathering area. It’s too far out for us to know what the weather will be like. If the weather is good\, we might go to the patio for a bonfire! DESCRIPTION:Wisdom Prairie Winter Tour\nExperience the seasonal beauty of Wisdom Prairie as we explore the winter landscape. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying length through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. Guides will share our story of caring for the earth and help participants deepen their relationship with this land. If snow conditions permit\, we will have some snowshoes available to borrow. \n\nAll are welcome. Must be able to safely navigate winter trails.\n\nPlease meet at the front doors of the monastery building at 1:00 pm. If the event is cancelled due to inclement weather\, we will email you by the morning of the tour (please register below).\n\n\nLeader\n\nDr. Amy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery.
