SUMMARY:Resisting Christian Nationalism: What Is It and What Can I Do?
DESCRIPTION:Our ability to effectively resist Christian Nationalism depends on knowledge\, understanding\, and commitment to building meaningful alternatives. The Wisconsin Council of Churches has been involved in work at the intersection of faith and civil society for decades. We will begin our time together by beginning to better understand what Christian Nationalism is and how it functions among us. The presentation will discuss the relationship between religion and government and how deeply CN is embedded in our understandings. Participants will learn more about the roots of Christian Nationalism and how various movements are engaged in securing theocratic leadership in US society. There will be brief discussion of alignment between religious nationalist movements worldwide. In addition to responding to questions\, our speaker will discuss the long work of shifting culture and offer the audience an opportunity to engage in holy imagination regarding alternative futures. Everyone present will have a chance to develop specific pathways for action before they leave. \nSchedule\n\nTalk begins at 1:00 pm with a break and time at the end for questions.\nAt the break\, note cards will be passed out for collecting questions and collating into like topics.\n\nSpeaker – Rev. SUMMARY:The Great Search 3
DESCRIPTION:“The Great Search gathering is a reminder of the divine hospitality that calls us into a deeper relationship with God\, with the Earth\, and with each other. Filled with a kind of reckless love\, one leaves feeling restored and committed to bringing hope and healing to all life. The combination of John Philip’s teaching\, the spiritual practices led by Cami\, and the peaceful and beautiful surroundings of Holy Wisdom Monastery offers a personal and community guide to contemplation and spiritual growth.” \n–Catherine Maciariello\, The Great Search 2\, 2024 participant \n  \nThe Great Search 3\nWe hope you can join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery for The Great Search 3 from May 1-3\, 2025. \nIn 2022 John Philip Newell began a second series of annual retreats to address the deep spiritual yearnings of this moment in time and to help give birth to new beginnings in our lives and world.  \nThe Great Search 3 is the third of a three-part series of annual retreats led by the Celtic teacher John Philip Newell and his colleague Cami Twilling in which we explore the search for wisdom\, the search for meaning\, and the search for faith. \nThe teachings of this retreat are based on John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search: Turning to Earth & Soul in the Quest for Healing & Home (especially Chapters 7\, 8\, and 9 drawing on the wisdom of Rabindranath Tagore\, Etty Hillesum\, and Edwin Muir).  \nThe text for this three-year program is John Philip Newell’s new book The Great Search (August 2024). The shared prayer book for this program is Praying with the Earth. \nThe Great Search 3 can be taken as a stand-alone retreat or in conjunction with The Great Search 1 and The Great Search 2 which can be attended in any order and at any of our retreat centers across the country or online. \nFor more information about John Philip Newell\, Earth and Soul or The Great Search initiative\, visit https://www.earthandsoul.org. \nFor more information about the retreat at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, contact Pam Shellberg at pshellberg@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x126. \nSchedule\nThursday – May 1 \n\n\n\n3:00 pm\nTour of Holy Wisdom Monastery and Grounds\nGathering Area\n\n\n4:00-5:00 pm\nCheck-In/Getting Settled\nGathering Area\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nDining Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nEvening Prayer (please enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*7:15 pm\nSession 1: Introductory Presentation\nAssembly Room\n\n\n8:30 pm\nSacred Silence (until breakfast)\n\n\n\n\nFriday – May 2 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 2: Teaching I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 3: Spiritual Practice I (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n1:30 pm\nSilence (Siesta/Reading/Walking)\n\n\n\n*3:30 pm\nSession 4: Spiritual Practice II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n4:45 pm\nAfternoon Break\n\n\n\n5:15 pm\nDinner\nAssembly Room\n\n\n*6:30 pm\nSession 5: Teaching II (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n7:30 pm\nWine & Cheese Reception & Book Signing\nGathering Area\n\n\n\nSaturday – May 3 \n\n\n\n*8:30 am\nMorning Prayer (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n9:00 am\nBreak\n\n\n\n*9:15 am\nSession 6: Teaching III (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n10:15 am\nMorning Break\n\n\n\n*10:45 am\nSession 7: Thanksgiving (enter in silence)\nAssembly Room\n\n\n12:00 pm\nLunch\nDining Room\n\n\n\nLeaders – John Philip Newell and Cami Twilling\n \nJohn Philip Newell\nJohn Philip Newell is an internationally renowned Celtic teacher and author of spirituality who calls the modern world to reawaken to the sacredness of Earth and every human being. \nCanadian by birth\, and also Scottish\, he resides with his wife Ali in the ecovillage of Findhorn in Scotland. In 2016 he began the Earth & Soul initiative and teaches regularly in the United States and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimage weeks on Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland. \nHis PhD is from the University of Edinburgh and he has authored over 15 books\, including his award-winning publication\, Sacred Earth Sacred Soul\, which was the 2022 Gold Winner of the Nautilus Book Award for Spirituality and Religious Thought of the West. His new book\, also with HarperOne\, is The Great Search (August 2024)\, in which he looks at the great spiritual yearnings of humanity today in the context of the decline of religion as we have known it.  \nNewell speaks of himself as ‘a wandering teacher’ following the ancient path of many lone teachers before him in the Celtic tradition\, seeking the wellbeing of the world. He has been described as having ‘the heart of a Celtic bard and the mind of a Celtic scholar’\, combining in his teachings the poetic and the intellectual\, the head as well as the heart\, and spiritual awareness as well as political and ecological concern. \nCami Twilling\nCami Twilling\, based in Colorado\, is the Director of Earth & Soul (a Celtic initiative of study\, spiritual practice and compassionate action inspired by the teachings of John Philip Newell). As well as heading up the overall work of Earth & Soul\, she facilitates the spiritual practice component of the Earth & Soul Retreats. In addition to leading mountain and urban retreats\, she has led international pilgrimage groups to Iona in the Western Isles of Scotland and work teams to Guatemala to build houses in communities that have suffered from political strife and economic hardship. Cami is passionate about the relationship between spirituality and action and believes that spiritual vision and practice can play a vital role in helping to heal and transform our lives both individually and together. \nDates/Times\n4:00 pm\, Thursday\, May 1 – 1:00 pm\, Saturday\, May 3\, 2025 \nCost\n$360/person\, includes program and meals\, Thurs. dinner\, Fri. lunch and dinner\, Fri. book signing and reception\, Sat. lunch; does NOT include lodging. \nLimited scholarships are available. SUMMARY:Lent Series: Teach Us to Pray (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Prayer is a pillar of Benedictine life\, an essential in the spiritual life and a principal theme of Jesus’ life. But in our own lives\, prayer can be a source of confusion\, insecurity and also a little bit of a mystery. Listen to what others say about their own experiences with prayer and contemplation. Listen with others for how the spirit responds when we ask\, “teach us to pray.” \nSchedule\nEach 90-minute session will include some teaching about a particular aspect of prayer as shown in the Gospel of Luke\, reflections on other teachings about contemplation\, the sharing of personal experiences\, and an opportunity to explore different practices of prayer and contemplation. \nLeader – Pam Shellberg\n \n  \nPam Shellberg is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom monastery\, a student of scripture\, and someone always seeking to live a contemplative life. \nCost\n$50/person \nIf you would like to have lunch at the monastery after the in-person sessions\, we have now added an option to purchase lunch for $18/lunch. SUMMARY:Advent: To Seek and to Save the Lost (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The Advent season returns us to the incarnation of the Christ-spirit and its power to restore us in hope and renew us in purpose. This series takes its starting point from the Gospel of Luke where Jesus says he has come “to seek and to save the lost.” Sometimes the language of saving doesn’t always set easily with us. Nor does the suggestion that we are somehow lost! Yet\, in setting aside time to listen with the ear of our hearts to Jesus\, to Luke\, to each other and to our own inner longings – we may find ourselves newly inspired by the Christ-spirit\, who speaks what we most need to hear and promises to preserve us in love. \n90-minute sessions will include some teaching\, small group discussion\, contemplative dialogue\, and a time for meditation. \nDates/times\nThis three-week Advent series will be offered in-person on Tuesdays from 10:00-11:30 am or virtually on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 pm. \nIn-person (Tuesdays\, 10:00-11:30 am)\n\nDec 3\nDec 10\nDec 17\n\nVirtually (Wednesdays\, 6:30-8:00 pm)\n\nDec. 4\nDec. 11\nDec. 18\n\nSpeaker – Pam Shellberg\n\nPam Shellberg is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom monastery\, a contemplative\, a student of the Christian scriptures and a spiritual director. \nCost\n$35/person \n  \nRegister\nPlease register by Dec. 2\, 2024.
