SUMMARY:Conversations About Our Benedictine Life: Work
DESCRIPTION:Deepen your understanding of Benedictine spirituality by joining us for one or more Conversations About Our Benedictine Life: Work. These gatherings offer time for reflection\, for the contemplation of short readings about the nature of work and its place in our lives from the Rule of Benedict and other wise authors\, and the goodness of being part of the shared way of Benedictine life. Benedictine monastic life follows a rhythm of work\, study\, prayer\, and rest; work has a place but is not the whole\, is not the central element – it finds its place in a rhythm of balance that can bring depth and peace to our days. Come listen to Benedict and each other with the ears of your heart; explore the challenges and the gifts of work in our lives. \nThe conversations follow an easy flow of readings and small group conversation in the context of Benedictine practices of statio (silent pauses) and lectio divina (sacred reading – slow and meditative). The gatherings will be between 60 and 90 minutes in length. \nThe registration deadline for each session is the day before the event you wish to attend. \nThese sessions are open to any adult who relates to any of the Holy Wisdom Monastery communities. \nDates/Times\nIn-Person \n\nSunday\, July 19 – 10:30-11:30 am\nSister Lynne Smith and Abbie Loomis\nWednesday\, August 12 – 1:00-2:30 pm\nSister Lynne Smith and Phyllis Lobdell\n\nVirtual (over Zoom; link will be provided after you register) \n\nTuesday\, July 21 – 6:30-8:00 pm CST\nMary Lynn Adams\, Patty Jenkins and Abbie Loomis\nWednesday\, August 5 – 6:30-8:00 pm CST\nMary Lynn Adams\, Patty Jenkins

SUMMARY:Faith in Action – HR1\, One Big Beautiful Budget Bill
DESCRIPTION:We have an opportunity to learn more about HR 1\, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act\, passed by our federal representatives on July 4\, 2025. HR 1 is having an unjust impact on children\, older adults\, people with disabilities and our environment in Dane County. Some of the impact is already being felt through the SNAP/WIC (food share) programs with families and our food pantries. \nWe can be in community with one another as we educate ourselves\, express our concerns\, and respond through specific letters to our Dane County Supervisors. Through these actions\, we become a community of advocates working together for justice and the well-being of our neighbors. \nPlease join Rex Piercy and Sally Bowers as they present information about HR 1 and the importance of letter writing. We will also take action together by writing letters to our Dane County Supervisors about the impact of HR 1 on our community. If you do not know your supervisor – no worry – we can find it for you as you write your letter. \nSee you Sunday in the monastery boardroom!

SUMMARY:Sacred Thresholds
DESCRIPTION:Sacred Thresholds is a contemplative prayer gathering. \nWe are living through a unique chapter in American history when our most cherished values seem threatened\, indeed\, our whole way of life. Each of us\, in our own way\, is asking\, What can I do?\, and the answers\, so far\, seem woefully inadequate to the challenge. It is in that same spirit of humility that we are offering Sacred Thresholds as our answer to that question. Woefully inadequate\, yes\, small\, but genuine\, offered in a communal spirit\, coming together to make a circle\, to pray\, in old ways and in new ways\, to hold each other’s hearts and help one another to stay open. That is what Sacred Thresholds is all about. It’s a work in progress. Like all of us. \nPlease join us at 1:00 pm on the first Monday of the month in the Retreat and Guest House room 222. \nUpcoming dates\n\nOct. 5\, 2026\nNov. 2\, 2026\nDec. 7\, 2026\nJan. 4\, 2027\nFeb. 1\, 2027\nMar. 1\, 2027\nApr. 5\, 2027\nMay 3\, 2027\nJun. 7\, 2027

SUMMARY:Advent Series: Making Our Way in the Wilderness (in-person)
DESCRIPTION:Several of the scripture texts we’ll hear this Advent season draw our attention to the wilderness. The gospel writers highlight John the Baptist – a man living in the desert\, his voice crying in the wilderness – as the one heralding the arrival of the Christ. The prophet Isaiah calls the people to prepare a way in the wilderness for this arrival. Monastics in the early centuries went into desert wildernesses specifically to clear a path so that the Spirit could more easily reach their souls. We have all had desert experiences at one time or another; we have all found ourselves wandering in the wilderness. Be a part of this Advent contemplative community\, together considering how it is precisely in those very wilderness times we are invited to prepare a path for the Christ spirit to enter our lives\, our hearts. \nEach 90-minute session has a short period of introduction to a sacred writing\, a person\, a reflection or image and time for both small and large group conversation. Each session is also punctuated with contemplative practices such as statio (moments of silence)\, lectio divina (sacred reading)\, visio divina (sacred seeing). \nDates/Times\nIN-PERSON – Tuesdays\, 10:00-11:30 am \n\nDec. 1\nDec. 8\nDec. 15\n\nConsider extending your experience by staying longer and attending optional prayer and/or lunch at the monastery. There is a fee for lunch if you decide to stay. \n\n11:45 am – Midday Prayer: All are welcome to join the sisters’ community and guests for communal prayer in the Oratory (lower level of the monastery building). Click to learn more about prayer at Holy Wisdom Monastery.\n12:00 pm – Lunch ($19): Enjoy a delicious meal prepared fresh by our chefs. Email retreats@holywisdommonastery.org to reserve your meal 48 hours in advance. Please specify which date/dates you wish to stay for lunch.\n\nVIRTUAL – Wednesdays\, 6:30-8:00 pm \n\nDec. 2\nDec. 9\nDec. 16\n\nProgram Leader – Pam Shellberg\n \nPam is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom Monastery. As a lifelong student\, educator\, and scripture scholar\, it is always a special joy for her to offer an experience of contemplative engagement with sacred texts. \n  \n  \nCost\nThere are three options to attend or watch the Advent series sessions: \n\n$37 per person for in-person sessions (Dec. 1\, Dec. 8\, Dec. 15)\n$37 per screen for virtual sessions (Dec. 2\, Dec. 9\, Dec. 16)\n$37 per person for recorded virtual sessions (sent out after each virtual session)\n\nRegister\nPlease register by November 25\, 2026 for the in-person or virtual Advent series. SUMMARY:Holy Week Silent Retreat
DESCRIPTION:“In silence and in hope shall our strength be.” Isaiah 30:15 \nAnyone who would like to experience a deep and sustained silence in the quiet companionship of others is invited to the Holy Week Silent Retreat.
