SUMMARY:Faith in Action – HR1\, One Big Beautiful Budget Bill
DESCRIPTION:We have an opportunity to learn more about HR 1\, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act\, passed by our federal representatives on July 4\, 2025. HR 1 is having an unjust impact on children\, older adults\, people with disabilities and our environment in Dane County. Some of the impact is already being felt through the SNAP/WIC (food share) programs with families and our food pantries. \nWe can be in community with one another as we educate ourselves\, express our concerns\, and respond through specific letters to our Dane County Supervisors. Through these actions\, we become a community of advocates working together for justice and the well-being of our neighbors. \nPlease join Rex Piercy and Sally Bowers as they present information about HR 1 and the importance of letter writing. We will also take action together by writing letters to our Dane County Supervisors about the impact of HR 1 on our community. If you do not know your supervisor – no worry – we can find it for you as you write your letter. \nSee you Sunday in the monastery boardroom!

SUMMARY:Social Justice Committee
DESCRIPTION:Palestinian Connection Project\nYearning to make a practical difference – one that is desperately needed – in our fraught and fearful world? Wanting to join hearts with others to have an impact on our world\, so beset by suffering\, violence and inequity? JOIN US! for an introduction to the new Palestinian Connection Project! \nMembers of the Holy Wisdom Monastery Social Justice Committee invite you to join us in the Monastery Boardroom after worship on Sunday\, August 23\, 2026\, to hear about the new Palestinian Connection Project\, a heart-to-heart relationship between our Sunday Assembly community and the approximately 2\,000 Palestinian people in 12 villages at the southern end of the West Bank. These are the villages about which we learned in last year’s viewing of the film\, No Other Land. The villages are currently under a demolition order; it is now impossible to be employed in the West Bank\, and aid organizations are no longer able to work here. The villagers’ goals are simple: to maintain their villages\, remain on their land and raise their families. Through this project\, members of Sunday Assembly have an opportunity to directly and meaningfully address the injustice and suffering of this small community\, and to build a lasting relationship of support and solidarity with these families. \nCan’t join us on the Aug. 23rd but want to know more? Contact Roberta Felker at rfelker4221@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Resisting Christian Nationalism: What Is It and What Can I Do?
DESCRIPTION:Our ability to effectively resist Christian Nationalism depends on knowledge\, understanding\, and commitment to building meaningful alternatives. The Wisconsin Council of Churches has been involved in work at the intersection of faith and civil society for decades. We will begin our time together by beginning to better understand what Christian Nationalism is and how it functions among us. The presentation will discuss the relationship between religion and government and how deeply CN is embedded in our understandings. Participants will learn more about the roots of Christian Nationalism and how various movements are engaged in securing theocratic leadership in US society. There will be brief discussion of alignment between religious nationalist movements worldwide. In addition to responding to questions\, our speaker will discuss the long work of shifting culture and offer the audience an opportunity to engage in holy imagination regarding alternative futures. Everyone present will have a chance to develop specific pathways for action before they leave. \nSchedule\n\nTalk begins at 1:00 pm with a break and time at the end for questions.\nAt the break\, note cards will be passed out for collecting questions and collating into like topics.\n\nSpeaker – Rev. Dr. Kerri Parker\n \nRev. Dr. Kerri Parker (she/her) serves as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Council of Churches\, where she helps connect churches to address some of today’s most pressing societal concerns. She is a frequent preacher and speaker on Christian Nationalism\, racial justice\, and faith-based advocacy. \nDr. Parker completed her Doctor of Ministry at Iliff School of Theology with a dissertation titled “Unsettled Intersections: Decentering Whiteness and Church Survival Questions.” She earned her Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary with a thesis on “Domestic Violence as an Experience of Exile” and was ordained by the Wisconsin Conference United Church of Christ.
