Sacred Citizenship: The Connection between Politics and Spirituality Holy Wisdom Monastery is hosting a series of programs (April 10, May 1, October 9, October 30, 2018) designed to explore the interface between politics and the spiritual convictions that undergird our commitment to peace, justice and equality. Regardless of whether or not we identify ourselves with a particular religious tradition, being a person of faith in today’s politically divisive climate means honoring our responsibilities to one another, the environment, our country and our world. The Social Justice Group shares information on many concerns: prison reform, immigration, health care, racism, hunger, poverty, and others. The focus is to identify ways we can help and support others to be restored to equality and wholeness. Meetings will be after worship on the second Sunday of the month and we welcome all who are interested to attend.
On the second Tuesday of each month members of Holy Wisdom Monastery participate in preparing, serving and sharing a meal at Luke House. We normally serve a vegetarian lasagna dinner, complete with salad, bread, and cookies, but during the pandemic the menu has changed to cold sandwiches, fruit, cut veggies, packaged chips, desserts, bottled water and hot coffee. Our community of donors and volunteers covers the cost of this meal and prepares 120-150 brown bag dinners, which costs about $350 per month. Solidarity Sunday, observed every year on a Sunday in October, is a faith-based anti-violence initiative. Dignity USA initiated Solidarity Sunday in 1995 as a way of making opposition to anti-gay violence visible. Sunday Assembly members commemorate Solidarity Sunday to support and affirm the LGBTQ+ persons in our community.
