Listen to the forest. \nNovember 9 – Join Us for a Celebration of Our Year!\nWe’ll take a short walk near the gardens and Lost Lake listening and looking for signs of life. Afterward\, wrap up the season with a slide show of 2025 Kids on the Prairie activities\, games\, hot chocolate and cider.

DESCRIPTION:A riot of color on the prairie welcomes you to seek and celebrate your own abundance. This summer retreat invites you to sit with the lush growth of the season – on the prairie and in your own life and heart. It will hold space for attention to both. \nConversations about the season\, walks on the prairie\, naps\, art\, movement\, journaling\, great meals and welcoming accommodations will all be a part of what you can expect when you arrive. A renewed connection to nature and to yourself\, along with joy in the plentitude and abundance of the season are what you can expect to take with you when you leave. \nSeasonal Retreats\nEach season this year\, we will offer a different seasonal retreat. They will open spaces where each different season can offer its unique wisdom to us in the changing seasons of our lives. Each retreat is a two-day\, one-night experience at Holy Wisdom with cozy accommodations\, delicious meals\, spacious time periods for solitude\, reading and rest and contemplative conversations with other retreatants. SUMMARY:Spring Solar Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 13\, 2025 | 3:00-4:30 pm\nWe are looking for 90 people to help tilt the solar panels at Holy Wisdom Monastery\nHoly Wisdom Monastery is proudly a net-zero facility\, having implemented solar energy and geothermal heating and cooling in 2024 in our Retreat & Guest House. \nYou are invited to participate in the Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on\, community event where we gather together to celebrate solar energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. Participants had so much fun last year that we decided to make it an annual event! \nWatch the video below to learn how to tilt the solar panels\n \nThe 30-panel array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals and teams from the community and local businesses are invited to be part of the 2nd annual tilt event as participants or spectators. \nJoin us as one of 90 volunteers who will help to tilt Holy Wisdom’s solar panels! Or come watch and join us in prayer for climate change. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. \nWe will begin in the Monastery Assembly Room at 3:00 pm before going outside to begin tilting. Parking space may be limited\, so bring your friends\, but please carpool if you can. Please dress for the weather. \nCost\nThere is no cost for this event unless you sign up to stay for dinner at 5:15 pm after the tilting. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery to learn about the Backyard National Park movement\, which invites us all to create habitats that sustain life\, one yard at a time. \nEcologist Douglas Tallamy\, who founded the movement (sometimes also referred to as Homegrown National Parks) noted that\, in the past\, we simply expected our gardens to be pretty. In this moment\, we are increasingly expecting that they also support life\, build soil\, sequester carbon and protect water. \nSpeaker Marcel Wuethrich will showcase how you as an individual have the power to make a significant difference in supporting wildlife in our neighborhoods by planting native flowers\, grasses\, bushes and trees. Marcel will share the story of how he and his family converted their Madison yard from a lawn desert to a landscape with native plants that support insects\, birds and small mammals with food\, shelter and nesting habitat. Marcel will also share lessons learned from his work spearheading a volunteer-based restoration effort of 1.5 acres at the Odana Hills Golf Course in Madison. \nSchedule\n6:30 pm – welcome & introductions\n6:40 pm – presentation by Marcel Wuethrich\n7:40 pm – Q & A \nSpeaker – Marcel Wuethrich\nMarcel Wuethrich is a Distinguished Scientist working at the University of Wisconsin who describes himself as a biologist by education and heart. She's reading from her memoir-inprogress entitled Poetry as Pain Relief\, her spiritual journey of surviving dark times with beauty\, with humor and with grace. She celebrates the artists who have seeped into her bones\, to soothe her loneliness and bring her joy. \n\n\n	 Bill Frederick is the Director of Worship and Music at Holy Wisdom Monastery. He studied voice at the University of Wisconsin - Platteville earning a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Gerald Darrow. He has been leading music and liturgy in various churches full time over the past 40 years. He and Steve Johnson founded Enter the Season with Song\, 33 years ago\, a group of musicians who gather for Christmas and summer concerts over the years. The group recorded 3 CDs and every dollar from every concert raised was given to various charities\, totaling $250\,000. \n\n\n	 Steve Johnson is the Director of Music Ministry at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Madison. He has worked for the past 30+ years in various churches as Director of Liturgy and Music. Steve studied voice and piano at the University of Wisconsin - Madison earning a degree in k-12 music education.  \n\n\n	Terry Larson subscribes to the notion that our bodies are made of stardust and our souls are made of stories. Storytelling connects us to the divine within ourselves and within one another. \n\n\n	Janet Neurauter's first time on stage was as a reindeer in her 2nd grade Holiday pageant and was actively involved in theater throughout school and with the Nicolet Players in Rhinelander\, WI. She enjoys writing short stories and monologues and is working on her second play. \n\n\n	Susan Santner is a highly versatile and passionate storyteller with a wealth of experience. She’s a featured teller at state and regional festivals\, schools\, library systems\, and service clubs. Her roles as an actress\, theatre director\, puppeteer\, and librarian further highlight her creativity and dedication to the arts\, particularly in storytelling. She brings a dynamic and multi-faceted approach to her storytelling\, likely creating immersive\, captivating experiences for her listeners. \n\n\n	George Teague is a Madison-based cellist and teacher. He maintains an active studio of students at home in Madison and at UW - Stevens Point. George received his performance degrees from Northern Arizona University and the Chicago College of Performing Arts.\n\n\n	Patrick Terry was born and raised in Janesville\, Wisconsin\, and has been heard on operatic stages across the world. Career highlights include singing Eustazio at the Glyndebourne Festival\, Rinaldo with the Minnesota Opera\, Rosencrantz with the Bayerische Staatsoper\, and premiering Brett Dean’s “In this brief moment” with the Elbphilharmonie. He earned degrees from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities\, The Royal Academy of Music in London\, and was the first countertenor to join the Jette Parker Young Artist program at The Royal Opera House Covent Garden. \n\n\n	Erin Ruzicka Trondson is the winner of the third annual Apprentice House Chapbook Competition for her manuscript Nesting. Her current manuscript was a finalist for the Lena-Miles Wever Todd Poetry Prize. Erin’s poetry has also appeared in numerous publications. DESCRIPTION:Holy Wisdom Monastery is partnering with Dane County Parks to host another Women’s* Restoration Workday on Thursday\, Nov. 14\, 2024\, from 1:00-3:30 pm! \nWhy a Women’s* Workday? \n*It can often be hard for women\, folks who are non-binary/transgender\, and other gender minorities to feel comfortable using chainsaws and brush cutters in a typical restoration workday environment. These workdays are meant to create space for such folks who would benefit from this event and to build community in Dane County. We welcome any level sawyer and folks interested in equipment operation. Not interested in operating a chainsaw? Perfect! We also need brush haulers and folks interested in using a parsnip predator to go after invasive weeds. \nVolunteers should wear boots or other closed toed shoes\, and dress and be ready to work in most weather conditions. DESCRIPTION:Experience the seasonal beauty of Wisdom Prairie by coming out to explore the autumn landscape. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying lengths through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nAll tours will depart from front doors\, and last approximately 75 minutes (flexible\, depending on conditions and group interest). \nTour guides\nAmy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She has a PhD in prairie ecology from UW Madison\, almost a decade of professional experience in the field of restoration ecology\, and a deep-rooted family tradition of restoring and tending prairies that spans four generations. \nAmy will be joined by several experienced tour guides from Friends of Wisdom Prairie. \nRegister\nPlease register below to let us know how many tour guides we’ll need.
