SUMMARY:Medicinal Plant Practicum
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop explores the ecology of native medicinal plants\, when and how to harvest them and the best ways to process and utilize them. We will focus on native plants frequently used in herbal medicine\, such as elderberry\, nettle and echinacea. Emma Kloes will teach how to identify plants and forage\, while showcasing foundational processing techniques so you can begin making your own syrups\, tinctures\, infused oils and salves at home. Participants can go home with a small jar of elderberry syrup if they choose. \nNote: Emma will be focusing on wild plants and techniques that are commonly utilized and studied. Emma is not a medical provider\, and this workshop is intended for educational purposes only. She has spent more than six years foraging\, farming vegetables and perennial crops and learning how to process and cook with these foods. Wildlife such as turkeys and deer are frequently active. Insects including butterflies and bees work to pollinate. \nAre the Holy Wisdom Monastery trails open to the public?  \nYes; Holy Wisdom Monastery’s trails are open to the public! In addition\, we have many other opportunities to engage with our land including environmental events\, volunteering\, nature brochures\, trail maps\, and more. \nWhat do I need to know about accessibility for this event? \nThe tour will cover 1-1.5 miles on walking trails at a leisurely pace. Various tour lengths will be offered. Elevation and trail conditions may vary depending on recent weather. Must be able to walk one mile on mowed hiking trails. DESCRIPTION:Nature Photography For Kids Ages 6-12\nChildren ages 6-12 and their adults are invited to join Sandy Weber\, professional photographer\, to use photography to discover the beauty of nature and surprising interactions all around us. Participants will learn beginner photography skills such as framing\, light and shadow with a digital camera. Each child will print one of their photos. The program runs from 10:30 am-12:00 pm. We will start indoors with a short introduction\, then go outdoors to explore the land through the camera lens. \nSchedule\n\n10:30 am – Gather in the Boardroom for orientation to nature photography\n10:45 am – Go outside to take photos\n11:25 am – Meet in the Boardroom to print photos\, mount them\, decorate frames and write captions\n11:55 am – Group sharing and closing\n\nCost & Registration\nPlease register by May 25\, 2026. This event is free for attendees\, but good will donations to Holy Wisdom and the Friends of Wisdom Prairie are always encouraged and appreciated. \nRegistration is limited to 10 children ages 6 to 12 and their adults. You can expect a leisurely walk\, approximately one hour long\, on grassy trails. \nThese informal tours will be offered monthly on the third Thursday of the month for the remainder of the growing season. No registration necessary. Meet at the kiosk at the top of the monastery building parking lot (stay to the right at the fork in the driveway). \nIf you’d like to receive reminders about these monthly plant walks\, please email Amy aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org.

Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying lengths through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. \nAll tours will depart from front doors\, and last approximately 75 minutes (flexible\, depending on conditions and group interest). \nTour guides\nAmy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She has a PhD in prairie ecology from UW Madison\, almost a decade of professional experience in the field of restoration ecology\, and a deep-rooted family tradition of restoring and tending prairies that spans four generations. \nAmy will be joined by several experienced tour guides from Friends of Wisdom Prairie. \nRegister\nPlease register below to let us know how many tour guides we’ll need.
