In the first of its kind at Holy Wisdom\, the Handmade Fresh Pasta Workshop will use cuisine to explore the relationship between agriculture and grains\, as well as the diverse cultural iterations of bread- and pasta-making. \nUsing fresh ingredients grown on the monastery grounds\, participants will knead\, roll and cut their way to a delicious and heartwarming experience exclusive to Holy Wisdom. \n  \nMenu \nAppetizer – Winter Root and Kale Salad \n\nCreating a maple-mustard vinaigrette from scratch\, learn about flavor diffusion while working with seasonal Wisconsin produce.\n\nMain Course – Cappelletti al Brodo \n\nAfter kneading\, rolling and cutting pasta dough from scratch\, participants will learn how to shape and stuff cappelletti pasta with locally grown squash\, ricotta\, parmesan and fresh winter herbs.\nSubstituting vegetables for meat\, learn how to make a sweet\, nutty broth traditionally served during winter in northern Italy.\n\nMocktail – Spiced Cranberry Glow \n\nComplementing the winter menu\, enjoy a non-alcoholic spritzer made of sparkling water\, fresh cranberry juice\, honey-ginger syrup and a hint of cinnamon. DESCRIPTION:Sacred Thresholds is a contemplative prayer gathering. \nWe are living through a unique chapter in American history when our most cherished values seem threatened\, indeed\, our whole way of life. Each of us\, in our own way\, is asking\, What can I do?\, and the answers\, so far\, seem woefully inadequate to the challenge. It is in that same spirit of humility that we are offering Sacred Thresholds as our answer to that question. Woefully inadequate\, yes\, small\, but genuine\, offered in a communal spirit\, coming together to make a circle\, to pray\, in old ways and in new ways\, to hold each other’s hearts and help one another to stay open. That is what Sacred Thresholds is all about. It’s a work in progress. She founded ‘On the Borderline Project\,’ a self-esteem building photography program for adolescent girls which ran for 10 years in Madison earning her the ‘North Star Community Award’ for outstanding contributions to the Northside community of Madison\, WI. She currently teaches a contemplative photography program through UW Health Mindfulness Program. She has exhibited her work extensively in Madison and at the Chicago Field Museum. \n  \n  \n \n  \nDavid McKee is a haiku poet and retired psychotherapist living in Madison. He is an oblate of Holy Wisdom Monastery and serves as lead shepherd for the Oblate formation program. His haiku have been published in various journals including Modern Haiku\, Frogpond\, Acorn\, Kingfisher\, Bones\, Presence and Password. His work has also been anthologized in a variety of publications and he was invited to join a group of 17 haiku poets in sharing large selections of their haiku in the ‘New Resonance’ series published by Red Moon Press. \n  \n  \nHidden Glimmers: Weaving Contemplative Photography and Haiku Exhibit\nThe exhibit is on display in the Monastery Gathering Area from February 4 – May 5\, 2026. DESCRIPTION:The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. Holy Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the sixth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team ‘Wrens of Wisdom Prairie’ in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 9th. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four guided walking tours and one session of ‘sit spot birding’ which is accessible for those who don’t wish to walk. Group size for each session will be limited to 10 participants. Birders of all ages and experience levels are welcome. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 9th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. SUMMARY:Madre Tierra Art Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:In Holy Wisdom’s newest exhibit\, Madre Tierra\, artist Issis Macias invites viewers into an intimate\, contemplative encounter with the natural world. Rooted in Macias’s cultural lineage – and in the Indigenous and Latin American understanding of Madre Tierra as a living presence and source of ancestral wisdom – the Spanish title affirms a matrilineal thread and an inheritance of strength\, intuition and reverence for the land. Please join us for the opening reception of this exhibit of abstract art which echoes the shifting rhythms of sea\, sky and earth through layers of pigments\, sweeping gestures and spontaneous pastel markings. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception opens \n6:30 pm – Issis will talk about her work and answer questions \n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nLight refreshments will be provided by the artist. \nArtist – Issis Macias\nIssis Macias is a self-taught artist and the daughter of Mexican immigrants. Born and raised in Los Angeles\, Issis moved to the Madison area in 2016 where she continued her exploration of intuitive abstract art. Issis was named the 2025 Latina Artist of the Year and received the 2024 Micaela Salinas Artist Fellowship sponsored by Latinos Organizing for Understanding and Development. \n  \n  \n  \nThe exhibit is on display in the Monastery Gathering Area from May 6 – July 7\, 2026. SUMMARY:Nature Photography for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Nature Photography For Kids Ages 6-12\nChildren ages 6-12 and their adults are invited to join Sandy Weber\, professional photographer\, to use photography to discover the beauty of nature and surprising interactions all around us. Participants will learn beginner photography skills such as framing\, light and shadow with a digital camera. Each child will print one of their photos. The program runs from 10:30 am-12:00 pm. We will start indoors with a short introduction\, then go outdoors to explore the land through the camera lens. \nSchedule\n\n10:30 am – Gather in the Boardroom for orientation to nature photography\n10:45 am – Go outside to take photos\n11:25 am – Meet in the Boardroom to print photos\, mount them\, decorate frames and write captions\n11:55 am – Group sharing and closing\n\nCost & Registration\nPlease register by May 25\, 2026. This event is free for attendees\, but good will donations to Holy Wisdom and the Friends of Wisdom Prairie are always encouraged and appreciated. \nRegistration is limited to 10 children ages 6 to 12 and their adults. SUMMARY:Shinrin-Yoku: Walks for the Weary
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a relaxing walk on the prairie at Holy Wisdom Monastery.\nIt will be a slow-paced quiet walk guided by Valerie Vervoort\, a certified Shinrin-yoku guide. The intent of this 90-minute walk is renewal through using our senses of sight\, hearing\, touch and taste. Invitations planned by your guide are easy and subject to each person’s comfort level. Sharing and tea will be part of the experience. \nParticipants will need to dress appropriately for weather conditions and be able to walk a mile and a half on trails that are sometimes uneven and include gentle slopes. Walking sticks are encouraged. Walk starts and ends at the kiosk in the monastery building parking lot. \nProceeds from these walks go to support programs at Holy Wisdom Monastery. \n2026 Dates/Times\n\nJun. 6 – 10:00-11:30 am\nAug. 1 – 10:00-11:30 am\nOct. 3 – 10:00-11:30 am\n\nLeader – Valerie Vervoort\nValerie Vervoort grew up exploring the woods and Mississippi River on her family farm in Northern Minnesota. She earned a master’s degree in education and taught in daycares for many years where she was known for gardening and encouraging kids to explore the outdoors. After retirement she volunteered as the ‘Garden Grandma’ at Fox Prairie Elementary School’s gardens. In 2020\, she became an Oblate at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, volunteered for prairie workdays and as a trail monitor. In 2024 her interest in the land as a healer lead to getting certified as a Forest Therapy Guide in May of that year. She has since lead Forest Therapy walks for Oblates\, Sunday Assembly members and a visiting college choir. \n  \nCost\n$37/person (no lunch) \n$56/person (with lunch\, May 29 registration deadline) \nRegister\nPlease register by Jun. 5\, 2026.
