SUMMARY:Lent Series: Teach Us to Pray
DESCRIPTION:Prayer is a pillar of Benedictine life\, an essential in the spiritual life and a principal theme of Jesus’ life. But in our own lives\, prayer can be a source of confusion\, insecurity and also a little bit of a mystery. In Luke’s gospel\, Jesus’ disciples say to him\, “teach us to pray.” Maybe you would like to say the same thing. Listen to what others say about their own experiences with prayer and contemplation. Listen with others for how the spirit responds when we ask\, “teach us to pray.” \nSchedule\nEach 90-minute session will include some teaching about a particular aspect of prayer as shown in the Gospel of Luke\, reflections on other teachings about contemplation\, the sharing of personal experiences\, and an opportunity to explore different practices of prayer and contemplation. \nLeader – Pam Shellberg\n \n  \nPam Shellberg is the director of spiritual nourishment at Holy Wisdom monastery\, a student of scripture\, and someone always seeking to live a contemplative life. \nCost\n$50/person \nIf you would like to have lunch at the monastery after the in-person sessions\, we have now added an option to purchase lunch for $18/lunch. SUMMARY:Meditation & Prayer Through Sacred Dance
DESCRIPTION:Body movement and rhythmic dance is a natural human behavior in most of the world. Unfortunately\, not all religious leaders see it that way. A 1975 Vatican advisory\, “Dance in the Liturgy\,” acknowledged that some non-Western cultures still retain liturgical dancing and may therefore be appropriate\, but not so in the West. The union of dance and religion in the West has long been severed except within the Black church and among some white Pentecostals. \nNevertheless\, dance is a normal\, healthy human activity. In Christian and Jewish scriptures\, Miriam leads dancing to celebrate crossing the Red Sea\, King David dances in worship\, and within many Psalms\, God is praised by dancing. It is our tradition. Dancing becomes sacred when we acknowledge a higher power\, when we give thanks for our existence\, and when we understand we are all connected in and to the cosmos in which we live and have our being. \nCarla DeSola\, a pioneer and advocate of sacred dance for over 40 years\, writes\, “Dancing is like a beautiful garment\, a garment in which the Spirit moves and delights…When we dance we can recognize our own beauty…and with all creation simply be\, thus spontaneously praising God.” \nNo dance knowledge is necessary and participants will be encouraged to move as much or as little as they feel and are able. Come\, try on this beautiful garment. \nSchedule\n4:30-4:45 – Introductions\, parameters\, and stretching\n4:45-4:50 – Silencing and centering ourselves in the Benedictine tradition\n4:50-5:20 – Body movement (dancing) to the spiritual music of Hildegard of Bingen\n5:20-5:30 – Slowly “cool down” and centering ourselves before our departure \nLeader – David Couper\nDavid Couper is an Episcopal priest\, member of our Sunday Assembly and Benedictine oblate. He continues to lead an active physical and spiritual life into his later years. For many years he was a teacher of Asian martial arts where he often introduced his students to music and dance during their training. Some of you may remember him as Madison’s Chief of Police from 1972-1993. \nCost\nPlease consider a free will offering for the monastery. \nRegistration\nPlease register with the button below by Apr. 22\, 2025. \n \n

SUMMARY:Great WI Birdathon
DESCRIPTION:The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. \nHoly Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the fifth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team ‘Wrens of Wisdom Prairie’ in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 10th. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four walking tours. Group size will be limited to 10 participants. Tour options include 6:30 am\, 8:00 am\, 10:00 am and noon. \nWe are also offering a birding ‘sit\, at 7:30 am in which we’ll make ourselves comfy on a bench or platform overlooking Lost Lake and observe activity from that spot\, with minimal walking involved. \nBirders of all ages and experience levels are welcome at all tours and sit. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 10th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. Submit your list of species to Amy Alstad\, aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x123. \nSupport Wrens of Wisdom Prairie by making a financial contribution\nAll of the dollars raised will directly support bird conservation. Half of the funds raised will stay at Holy Wisdom Monastery and be used to create and maintain bird habitat here\, with the remaining funds going to the Natural Resources Foundation.

This easily accessible activity can benefit all ages\, and serves as a reminder to slow down and be mindful by simply immersing oneself in the sights\, sounds\, and smells of nature. \nIn Holy Wisdom’s new art exhibit\, local artists Jennifer Peters and Annette Knapstein share their work inspired by Forest Bathing as a “tangible expression of our sensory experience in nature.” Please join us for the Forest Bathing Art Exhibit Reception on Friday\, May 30\, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception begins | light refreshments will be served\n6:30 pm – Artists give brief talk about their work and invite questions\n8:00 pm – Reception ends \nThe exhibit is on display in the Gathering Area of the monastery from May 21 – July 21\, 2025.  Gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday\, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm (excluding holidays) and Sunday 10:00 – 11:00 am. \nArtists – Annette Knapstein and Jennifer Peters\n \n“My family always encouraged creativity whether it was in music\, art or any other endeavor.” \nAnnette Knapstein grew up in Oregon\, Wisconsin\, and now lives in Middleton. Annette earned a degree in Economics and worked in advertising and marketing for more than 30 years. “I definitely used my love for the visual arts in my career\,” she laughed. Initially a photographer\, Annette began exploring colored pencils\, watercolors\, and acrylic painting several years ago. “My work is based on my impression of what I see\, rather than making an exact replica. My intention is to reflect how I feel about what I am experiencing and seeing.”  During COVID\, Annette spent a lot of time at Pheasant Branch Conservancy. “Being out in nature gave so much back to me – it was my safe refuge.” \n  \n  \n \n  \nJennifer Peters\, an expressionist photographer\, said her work in this exhibit is quite different than the show she had at the monastery in 2017.  “The photographs in this exhibit are much more ephemeral\, serene\, and delicate. By exploring a softer focus on what I experience in nature\, the painterly aspect of our natural world is revealed\, allowing us to see details that may go unnoticed.”  Jennifer attended Stevens College in Columbia\, Missouri where she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree\, majoring in piano. She earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at UW-Madison. Jennifer taught French at Blackhawk Middle School for 31 years and retired in 2011. Jennifer has always taken photographs\, has exhibited throughout the area and participated in art fairs for years.  Jennifer volunteers curating the art exhibits at Holy Wisdom and several other local venues. \n  \nRegistration\nPlease register by May 28\, 2025\, in order to have enough refreshments. Thank you!
