DESCRIPTION:Rescheduled from Jan. 19 to Feb. 16 \nJoin Holy Wisdom Monastery’s own Chef Felipe Saint-Martin in a hands-on cooking class\, where you will learn how to make authentic northern Italian recipes on your own. In the first of its kind at Holy Wisdom\, the Handmade Fresh Pasta Workshop will use cuisine to explore the relationship between agriculture and grains\, as well as the diverse cultural iterations of bread- and pasta-making. \nUsing fresh ingredients grown on the monastery grounds\, participants will knead\, roll and cut their way to a delicious and heartwarming experience exclusive to Holy Wisdom. \n  \nMenu \nAppetizer – Winter Root and Kale Salad \n\nCreating a maple-mustard vinaigrette from scratch\, learn about flavor diffusion while working with seasonal Wisconsin produce.\n\nMain Course – Cappelletti al Brodo \n\nAfter kneading\, rolling and cutting pasta dough from scratch\, participants will learn how to shape and stuff cappelletti pasta with locally grown squash\, ricotta\, parmesan and fresh winter herbs.\nSubstituting vegetables for meat\, learn how to make a sweet\, nutty broth traditionally served during winter in northern Italy.\n\nMocktail – Spiced Cranberry Glow \n\nComplementing the winter menu\, enjoy a non-alcoholic spritzer made of sparkling water\, fresh cranberry juice\, honey-ginger syrup and a hint of cinnamon. Served over ice with an orange slice.\n\n  \nLeader – Felipe Saint-Martin \nFelipe Saint-Martin is the esteemed Culinary Director and Chef de Cuisine at Holy Wisdom Monastery in Middleton\, Wisconsin\, where he infuses Benedictine hospitality with innovative\, sustainable cuisine. SUMMARY:Neurographic Art: A Contemplative Practice
DESCRIPTION:Neurographic Art is a contemplative practice that taps into the healing power of creativity. Can’t draw a straight line? Perfect! This workshop is for those with or without previous art experience. Participants will learn the basics of Neurographic Art and create their own work which will be suitable for framing. All supplies will be provided\, including a mat for the art created and handouts to take home. Join us to learn about this contemplative\, feel-good art practice that provides relaxation\, reduces stress and increases creativity. \nDue to popular demand\, we have opened a second session (of the same program) in the afternoon. \nSchedule\nSession I: 9:00 am-12:00 pm | Session II: 1:00-4:00 pm \n\n9:00-10:00 am | 1:00-2:00 pm – Welcome and introduction to Neurographic Art (Power Point and demonstration)\n10:00-11:30 am | 2:00-3:30 pm – Participants will make their own work of art using the techniques described and demonstrated\n11:30-11:45 am | 3:30-3:45 pm – The class will gather together to view everyone’s art and share their insights and experience\n\n  \n\n11:45-12:00 pm – Midday Prayer (optional)\n12:00-1:00 pm – Lunch (optional – participants in either session can stay for lunch for an additional fee)\n\nLeader – Janet Neurauter\n \nJanet Neurauter is a coworker at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She celebrates the artists who have seeped into her bones\, to soothe her loneliness and bring her joy. \n  \nYou can learn more about Jane at her website. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAnn Baltes (right) and Bill Rosholt (left) are members of Sunday Assembly and have cherished being\nconnected to this beloved community of communities over many years\, musically and\notherwise. They also consider it an extraordinary gift to have raised their daughter\,\nGrace\, at Holy Wisdom as an ecumenical Benedictine. Ann has a background serving in\nparishes and other settings in the areas of pastoral care\, adult and youth faith formation\,\nliturgical music\, and retreat facilitation. Bill works as a Systems Development Test\nEngineer for Exact Sciences in Madison. Ann and Bill met as undergrads studying voice\nand singing in choirs at Luther College in Decorah\, Iowa. They are both choral music\nenthusiasts having sung continuously since high school students in various choirs in\nIowa\, Pennsylvania\, Illinois\, and Wisconsin. They have sung regularly in Madison and\nsurrounding areas as both choral artists and soloists with the Isthmus Vocal Ensemble\,\nWisconsin Chamber Choir\, Madison Choral Project\, Cheers Madison\, and Madison\nSavoyards \nJean Feraca’s favorite 2024 Christmas gift is a coffee cup from an anonymous donor that reads\, “I am Kind of a Big Deal in Wisconsin.” Famous as a talk show host on Wisconsin Public Radio\, Jean was a writer before she became a broadcaster. The award-winning author of three books of poetry and the memoir\, I Hear Voices: a Memoir of Love\, Death\, and the Radio\, Jean teaches in UW-Odyssey\, the humanities program she co-founded\, and in Wisconsin prisons with the Prison Ministry Project. \nJean is a Sunday Assembly member\, Benedictine Oblate since 2016\, and one of the Monastic Monologues presenters. Jean’s a beloved voice of Wisconsin Public Radio and a true original. For 28 years\, Jean was the host and producer on WPR’s Ideas Network\, best known for the award-winning program Here on Earth: Radio Without Borders. Her work has beautifully blended humanities\, poetry\, curiosity\, and community\, making her one of the most respected and recognizable figures in public radio. She joined WPR in 1983 as a humanities producer and went on to host some of the network’s most memorable shows. Jean’s award-winning series\, “Women of Spirit” was developed with the help of the Benedictine Sisters here at Holy Wisdom. \nBut what really makes Jean shine is her warmth\, wit\, and ability to laugh at herself. When asked about her funniest moments on air\, she didn’t hesitate to share a few gems from her broadcasting life. There was the day she opened her own show with\, “Good morning\, I’m Jean Ferrara\,” accidentally mispronouncing her own name. Or the time she invited her big brother on as a guest—“big mistake\,” she laughs—only to have him greet her on air with\, “You already made a mistake!” And then there’s the moment she’ll never quite live down: introducing “Wisconsin’s most famous baseball player… Brett Favre!” \nJoin us for a performance by Jean Feraca during Monastic Monologues and enjoy stories\, humor\, and insight from a master storyteller whose voice—and laughter—have been part of Wisconsin’s cultural fabric for decades. \n  \n \nBill Frederick is the Director of Worship and Music at Holy Wisdom Monastery. He studied voice at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville while earning a Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Gerald Darrow. He has been leading music and liturgy in various Churches full-time over the past 40 years. 33 years ago\, Bill and Steve Johnson founded “Enter the Season With Song\,” a group of musicians who gather for Christmas and summer concerts. The group has recorded three CDs and has given every dollar raised from every concert\, a total exceeding $250\,000\, to various charities. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nMax Harris earned his B.A. in English from Cambridge University and went on to complete a Ph.D. in Religious Studies at the University of Virginia. Over the years\, he’s taught in a range of fields—from Latin American Studies to Psychiatry at the University of Virginia\, and Religion and Literature at Yale Divinity School. He’s also written six books\, including Carnival and Other Christian Festivals (University of Texas Press) and Sacred Folly: A New History of the Feast of Fools (Cornell University Press). \nBeyond academia\, Max has pastored Presbyterian churches in England\, Virginia\, Maryland\, and Wisconsin. But if you ask him what really matters\, he’ll tell you it’s not the titles or the books—it’s his 52-year (and counting!) marriage to Ann\, and the gracious\, saving work of the Holy Spirit that continues to shape their life together. \n  \n  \nSteve Johnson is the Director of Music Ministry at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Madison. He has worked for the past 30+ years in various churches as Director of Liturgy and Music. Steve studied voice and piano at the University of Wisconsin-Madison while earning a degree in k-12 music education. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nTerry Larson is a previous Protestant pastor who prefers poetry\, pollinator plants\, preaching\, progressive people\, polite politicians\, pithy plots\, pleasing prairies\, plentiful portions of produce and…alliteration. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nJanet Neurauter’s first time on stage was as a reindeer in her 2nd-grade holiday pageant and was actively involved in theater throughout school and with the Nicolet Players in Rhinelander\, WI. She enjoys writing short stories and monologues and is working on her second play. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nOriginally from Michigan\, Bill Santer II has called Wisconsin home since 1987. With a background in marketing\, education and the arts\, he now enjoys helping people find their perfect home as a realtor. At Sunday Assembly\, Bill feels fortunate to be part of a welcoming\, earth-conscious community that celebrates kindness\, open-minded conversation and shared purpose. Whether he’s helping someone settle into a new home\, concert-going\, telling stories or connecting with his community\, Bill brings a genuine spirit of curiosity\, care and joy to everything he does. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSusan Santner is a passionate and versatile storyteller who loves to bring stories to life. DESCRIPTION:The practice of natural history is the bedrock of science. This talk will illustrate how we as naturalists employ stories\, specimens\, exploration of the natural world and the practices of paying close attention to build our understanding of the world from the bottom up. Presenter Andrew Hipp will make a case for the importance of natural history as a set of skills and habits that help expose what we don’t yet know and build our affection for the world. Natural history puts the onus on each of us to learn something new before we lose any more pieces\, and it gives us the practices to do so. SUMMARY:Resisting Christian Nationalism: What Is It and What Can I Do?
DESCRIPTION:Our ability to effectively resist Christian Nationalism depends on knowledge\, understanding\, and commitment to building meaningful alternatives. The Wisconsin Council of Churches has been involved in work at the intersection of faith and civil society for decades. We will begin our time together by beginning to better understand what Christian Nationalism is and how it functions among us. The presentation will discuss the relationship between religion and government and how deeply CN is embedded in our understandings. Participants will learn more about the roots of Christian Nationalism and how various movements are engaged in securing theocratic leadership in US society. There will be brief discussion of alignment between religious nationalist movements worldwide. In addition to responding to questions\, our speaker will discuss the long work of shifting culture and offer the audience an opportunity to engage in holy imagination regarding alternative futures. Everyone present will have a chance to develop specific pathways for action before they leave. \nSchedule\n\nTalk begins at 1:00 pm with a break and time at the end for questions.\nAt the break\, note cards will be passed out for collecting questions and collating into like topics.\n\nSpeaker – Rev. Dr. Kerri Parker\n \nRev. Dr. Kerri Parker (she/her) serves as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Council of Churches\, where she helps connect churches to address some of today’s most pressing societal concerns. She led the Council’s nationally-recognized response to the COVID pandemic\, and has co-authored several of the Council’s study-action guides. She is a frequent preacher and speaker on Christian Nationalism\, racial justice\, and faith-based advocacy. \nDr. Parker completed her Doctor of Ministry at Iliff School of Theology with a dissertation titled “Unsettled Intersections: Decentering Whiteness and Church Survival Questions.” She earned her Master of Divinity from Chicago Theological Seminary with a thesis on “Domestic Violence as an Experience of Exile” and was ordained by the Wisconsin Conference United Church of Christ. Her alma mater was Smith College\, where she earned a BA. \nIn 2023\, Dr. Parker was honored with the United Church of Christ’s Avery D. Post Ecumenical Award. She currently serves on the Board of the Christian Unity and Interfaith Ministry of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. Her 20+ years of professional experience include serving as Executive Director of YWCA Rock County\, Chair of the Wisconsin Conference UCC Board of Directors\, on community task forces\, and as a local pastor. \nBeyond ministry\, Kerri is an avid reader\, loves show tunes\, and has too many stickers on her water bottles. SUMMARY:Beyond the Bloom Art Exhibit Reception
DESCRIPTION:Maron Massey’s exhibit of acrylic paintings on canvas at Holy Wisdom is a perfect fit with the mission of caring for the earth. Maron said\, “my work is inspired by nature. Some of the paintings in this exhibit reflect time spent here at the monastery.” Maron wants people to be drawn in by her color palette first and then by the image. By using all the colors found in nature\, she hopes her work will take people out of their daily concerns and recall what is really important. \nSchedule\n6:00 pm – Reception opens \n6:30 pm – Maron will share her thoughts about her work and answer questions \n8:00 pm – Reception concludes \nLight refreshments will be provided by the artist. \nArtist – Maron Massey\nMaron Massey’s work can be found throughout the Madison area. She has 14 paintings in the permanent collection at Epic\, the University of Wisconsin purchased three for their new eastside clinic and she recently completed 10 murals and 30 paintings for a downtown condominium association. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe exhibit is on display in the Monastery Gathering Area from November 5\, 2025 – February 3\, 2026. She is an enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation who grew up in the Wisconsin Dells.
