SUMMARY:Creating Backyard National Parks
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery to learn about the Backyard National Park movement\, which invites us all to create habitats that sustain life\, one yard at a time. \nEcologist Douglas Tallamy\, who founded the movement (sometimes also referred to as Homegrown National Parks) noted that\, in the past\, we simply expected our gardens to be pretty. In this moment\, we are increasingly expecting that they also support life\, build soil\, sequester carbon and protect water. \nSpeaker Marcel Wuethrich will showcase how you as an individual have the power to make a significant difference in supporting wildlife in our neighborhoods by planting native flowers\, grasses\, bushes and trees. Marcel will share the story of how he and his family converted their Madison yard from a lawn desert to a landscape with native plants that support insects\, birds and small mammals with food\, shelter and nesting habitat. Marcel will also share lessons learned from his work spearheading a volunteer-based restoration effort of 1.5 acres at the Odana Hills Golf Course in Madison. \nSchedule\n6:30 pm – welcome & introductions\n6:40 pm – presentation by Marcel Wuethrich\n7:40 pm – Q & A \nSpeaker – Marcel Wuethrich\nMarcel Wuethrich is a Distinguished Scientist working at the University of Wisconsin who describes himself as a biologist by education and heart. SUMMARY:Great WI Birdathon
DESCRIPTION:The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. \nHoly Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the fifth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team ‘Wrens of Wisdom Prairie’ in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 10th. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four walking tours. Group size will be limited to 10 participants. Tour options include 6:30 am\, 8:00 am\, 10:00 am and noon. \nWe are also offering a birding ‘sit\, at 7:30 am in which we’ll make ourselves comfy on a bench or platform overlooking Lost Lake and observe activity from that spot\, with minimal walking involved. \nBirders of all ages and experience levels are welcome at all tours and sit. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 10th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. Submit your list of species to Amy Alstad\, aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x123. \nSupport Wrens of Wisdom Prairie by making a financial contribution\nAll of the dollars raised will directly support bird conservation. Half of the funds raised will stay at Holy Wisdom Monastery and be used to create and maintain bird habitat here\, with the remaining funds going to the Natural Resources Foundation.

SUMMARY:Spring Solar Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on May 13\, 2025 | 3:00-4:30 pm\nWe are looking for 90 people to help tilt the solar panels at Holy Wisdom Monastery\nHoly Wisdom Monastery is proudly a net-zero facility\, having implemented solar energy and geothermal heating and cooling in 2024 in our Retreat & Guest House. \nYou are invited to participate in the Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on\, community event where we gather together to celebrate solar energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. Participants had so much fun last year that we decided to make it an annual event! \nWatch the video below to learn how to tilt the solar panels\n \nThe 30-panel array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals and teams from the community and local businesses are invited to be part of the 2nd annual tilt event as participants or spectators. \nJoin us as one of 90 volunteers who will help to tilt Holy Wisdom’s solar panels! Or come watch and join us in prayer for climate change. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. \nWe will begin in the Monastery Assembly Room at 3:00 pm before going outside to begin tilting. Parking space may be limited\, so bring your friends\, but please carpool if you can. Please dress for the weather. \nCost\nThere is no cost for this event unless you sign up to stay for dinner at 5:15 pm after the tilting. This program involves multiple sessions\, including outdoor field trips\, indoor photo-filled presentations and family-friendly activities. We’ll take a whirlwind tour of insect diversity\, be reminded of how much you already know about this large class of animals\, and learn how important insects are to our lives and to the workings of the natural world. \nRobberflies with Mike Reese: In this outdoor field trip\, we will explore prairie and woodland trails in search of robberflies\, an overlooked but amazing group of insects. Learn about robberfly ID\, ecology and their amazing hunting abilities. \nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser (indoor): Monarch butterfly populations have been declining over the last 25 years—essentially the entire time that we’ve been monitoring them. It is important to move beyond documenting this decline\, and focus on the challenge posed by monarch conservation and insect conservation in general. Come learn about the amazing biology of migratory monarchs\, how we can use data collected by scientists and public to understand what is driving monarch numbers\, and what we can do with that information. The take-home message will be how we can address species conservation—in our own gardens and beyond—in the face of climate and other human-driven changes.  \nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding (outdoor): More information coming soon. \nBumblebees with Jade Kochanski (indoor/outdoor): This session will offer an exploration of Wisconsin’s native bumble bees\, focusing on ecology\, conservation\, and identification. Participants will gain in-field identification experience and are encouraged to use their new knowledge to contribute to the WDNR Bumble Bee Brigade participatory science program. \nMonarch Butterflies with Karen Oberhauser (outdoor): The odds are that there is milkweed\, monarchs’ only host plant\, growing somewhere in a neighborhood near you. Join us for a treasure hunt as we look for monarch eggs and caterpillars on milkweed growing in Holy Wisdom Monastery gardens and prairies\, and check out the other interesting animals that find food or a place to rest on these amazing plants. We’ll look closely at the unique flowers found on all milkweed plants\, and learn about the milky sap that gives the plants their name. \nDragonflies with Edgar Spalding (indoor): More information coming soon. \nLeaders\nJade Kochanski is a pollinator and restoration ecologist whose work focuses on bumble bee conservation in restored tallgrass prairie managed with prescribed fire across Wisconsin. She is committed to community-focused outreach.  \nKaren Oberhauser has studied monarch butterflies for almost 40 years\, using traditional lab and field techniques\, as well as the contributions of a variety of audiences through participatory science. She is now happily retired\, but spent most of her career at the University of Minnesota\, before becoming the director of the UW-Madison Arboretum from 1997-2023.    \nMike Reese has worked as a cook\, botanist\, high school math teacher\, golf and basketball coach\, and finally a high school librarian. While he has no formal academic training in the field of entomology\, he has gained a tremendous depth of knowledge from spending lots of time wandering around\, getting his feet wet and looking for whatever happens to be flying by.   \nEdgar Spalding grew up in rural Nova Scotia and became deeply interested in nature\, and a life-long birder (including photography). But\, in college he became interested less in nature and more in the physical and chemical aspects of life processes — physiology is the best word. So he returned to his native USA for grad school (Penn State)\, postdoctoral work (Yale)\, and joined the faculty at UW–Madison in 1994.  \nWho Can Attend this Event?\nOpen to all. DESCRIPTION:The practice of natural history is the bedrock of science. This talk will illustrate how we as naturalists employ stories\, specimens\, exploration of the natural world and the practices of paying close attention to build our understanding of the world from the bottom up. Presenter Andrew Hipp will make a case for the importance of natural history as a set of skills and habits that help expose what we don’t yet know and build our affection for the world. Natural history puts the onus on each of us to learn something new before we lose any more pieces\, and it gives us the practices to do so. He has received awards for his teaching and research from the U.S. Fulbright Program\, National Science Teachers Association\, and International Oak Society. DESCRIPTION:The Great Wisconsin Birdathon is Wisconsin’s largest fundraiser for bird conservation. Each year bird enthusiasts from across the state form teams with the goal of finding as many unique bird species as possible while raising important funds for bird conservation. Holy Wisdom Monastery is participating in this event for the sixth time this year! We hope you’ll support our team ‘Wrens of Wisdom Prairie’ in our efforts to find as many bird species as possible on our property on May 9th. \nThere are several ways to participate: \nJoin us for a birding tour or ‘sit’\nWe are offering four guided walking tours and one session of ‘sit spot birding’ which is accessible for those who don’t wish to walk. Group size for each session will be limited to 10 participants. Birders of all ages and experience levels are welcome. \nCome birding on your own\nWe invite you to come explore the monastery property Saturday\, May 9th on your own\, and keep track of the birds you see and hear. Submit your list of species to Amy Alstad aalstad@holywisdommonastery.org or 608-836-1631\, x123. \nSupport Friends of Wisdom Prairie by making a financial contribution\nAll of the dollars raised will directly support bird conservation. SUMMARY:Spring Solar Tilt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, May 12\, 2026 | 5:00-8:00 pm\nYou and your family are invited to participate in the 3rd Annual Spring Solar Tilt\, a hands-on community event where we gather together to celebrate green energy\, honor the changing seasons and pray for the earth. Capacity is limited\, so register if you are coming! \nHoly Wisdom Monastery is proudly a net-zero facility\, having implemented solar energy and geothermal heating and cooling in 2024 in our Retreat & Guest House. \nThe monastery’s 30-panel solar array can be tilted vertically or horizontally\, depending on the season. The panels are currently in their more vertical position which helps to shed snow and catch the lower winter sun more efficiently. They must each be manually hand-cranked by teams of three people into their flat spring/summer orientation. Individuals\, families\, and teams from the community and local businesses are all invited to come be a part of this unique event! \nThere is no cost for this event unless you sign up for dinner before the tilting. Register below to let us know you’ll be coming. Each family will be responsible for one handle. \nDinner will take place in the Monastery Dining Room before going outside to begin the Tilt. Parking space may be limited\, so bring your friends\, but please carpool if you can. SUMMARY:Nature Photography for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Nature Photography For Kids Ages 6-12\nChildren ages 6-12 and their adults are invited to join Sandy Weber\, professional photographer\, to use photography to discover the beauty of nature and surprising interactions all around us. Participants will learn beginner photography skills such as framing\, light and shadow with a digital camera. Each child will print one of their photos. The program runs from 10:30 am-12:00 pm. We will start indoors with a short introduction\, then go outdoors to explore the land through the camera lens. \nSchedule\n\n10:30 am – Gather in the Boardroom for orientation to nature photography\n10:45 am – Go outside to take photos\n11:25 am – Meet in the Boardroom to print photos\, mount them\, decorate frames and write captions\n11:55 am – Group sharing and closing\n\nCost & Registration\nPlease register by May 25\, 2026. This event is free for attendees\, but good will donations to Holy Wisdom and the Friends of Wisdom Prairie are always encouraged and appreciated. \nRegistration is limited to 10 children ages 6 to 12 and their adults. We cannot accommodate walk-ins or small children at this event. \n \n

Take a look at tiny critters that feed other residents of Lost Lake. Observe painted turtles while we explore trails around the lake for signs of other creatures that call this their home.

SUMMARY:Sacred Queerness: Earth-Based Spiritual Retreat

You can join the waitlist with this link. \nEvent Description \nQueer and Trans people are a sacred part of the Earth\, always have been\, and always will be. We invite LGBTQ+ people of all ages to join four local queer spiritual leaders and land stewards for a two-day\, one-night healing retreat at Holy Wisdom Monastery. The retreat will hold time for writing and art\, work with the restored prairie and savanna ecosystems that surround the monastery and an exploration of what we hold as sacred. \nRecognizing the religious trauma many of us carry\, we are defining the “sacred” in this retreat broadly as “that which is bigger than us” – our place in the world\, community and how we find profound meaning. Sacred Queerness is open to people of any religious/spiritual path or none and participants will be asked to protect and honor this diversity. In an unsafe and turbulent time\, we will strengthen community bonds\, connect with the local more-than-human world and affirm our place on Earth. \nPlease bring a journal and something to write with. \nThis retreat is for anyone who identifies as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community. They serve as Basic Needs Advocate at OutReach LGBTQ+ Community Center\, coordinating housing and food assistance. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPam Shellberg (she/her) is the Director of Spiritual Nourishment at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, offering retreats and studies of spiritual traditions and practices. She is a homilist at the monastery and a spiritual director. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRev. Manato Jansen (he/him) is a presider and homilist at Holy Wisdom Monastery. He serves as Director of Residential Community at Pres House (UW-Madison)\, facilitating LGBTQ+ spiritual communities and scholarship programs for students. \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRachel Young Binter (she/her) is the Director of the Center for Clergy Renewal at Holy Wisdom Monastery and a former campus pastor. She is an experienced retreat leader\, certified therapeutic yoga instructor and Reiki practitioner who finds joy and healing in embodied care\, the earth and acts of justice. \n  \nCost\n$200/retreatant. Cost includes lunch and dinner on Saturday as well as breakfast on Sunday. We understand the importance of this retreat and we do not want expense to keep anyone from attending. Scholarships are available to help cover registration fees\, if needed. \nParents/Guardians must accompany minors on this retreat\, but will only be responsible for the meal portion of the registration fee ($57). \nRegister\nPlease register by July 4\, 2026. The maximum number of participants is 19 and registration will close when full. Once registration fills\, we will have a waiting list in case a space becomes available. \nCancellation policy – if you register but must cancel your registration\, you can receive a 75% refund up until July 4\, 2026. Would you like to deepen your spirituality in a setting that connects your faith with care for the earth? \nBecome a Summer Steward for six days in July at Holy Wisdom Monastery\, an intentional women’s community with deep roots in the Benedictine tradition. Live the monastic tradition of prayer\, work and rest in a progressive\, inclusive community whose mission includes being in right relationship with the earth and one another. Join us for prairie and oak savanna restoration\, gardening\, daily prayer and spiritual conversation. Share your experiences\, reflections and questions with women on a similar journey. \nAll this while living together in community on the monastery grounds. No previous experience required. We are an ecumenical community and encourage single\, unpartnered women 18-45 to apply. \n \n  \n
