SUMMARY:Creating Backyard National Parks
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Holy Wisdom Monastery to learn about the Backyard National Park movement\, which invites us all to create habitats that sustain life\, one yard at a time. \nEcologist Douglas Tallamy\, who founded the movement (sometimes also referred to as Homegrown National Parks) noted that\, in the past\, we simply expected our gardens to be pretty. In this moment\, we are increasingly expecting that they also support life\, build soil\, sequester carbon and protect water. \nSpeaker Marcel Wuethrich will showcase how you as an individual have the power to make a significant difference in supporting wildlife in our neighborhoods by planting native flowers\, grasses\, bushes and trees. Marcel will share the story of how he and his family converted their Madison yard from a lawn desert to a landscape with native plants that support insects\, birds and small mammals with food\, shelter and nesting habitat. Marcel will also share lessons learned from his work spearheading a volunteer-based restoration effort of 1.5 acres at the Odana Hills Golf Course in Madison. \nSchedule\n6:30 pm – welcome & introductions\n6:40 pm – presentation by Marcel Wuethrich\n7:40 pm – Q & A \nSpeaker – Marcel Wuethrich\nMarcel Wuethrich is a Distinguished Scientist working at the University of Wisconsin who describes himself as a biologist by education and heart. From his early childhood\, Marcel loved watching birds\, insects\, amphibians etc. It is a natural consequence that he became involved in restoring native habitats in Switzerland (where he grew up and studied) and then later in the USA after moving here. \nCost\n$12/person \nRegister\nPlease register below by March 12\, 2025. \nInterested but not able to attend in person? DESCRIPTION:Wisdom Prairie Winter Tour\nExperience the seasonal beauty of Wisdom Prairie as we explore the winter landscape. Knowledgeable tour guides will lead small groups on routes of varying length through the restored prairies\, savannas and woodlands of Holy Wisdom Monastery. Guides will share our story of caring for the earth and help participants deepen their relationship with this land. If snow conditions permit\, we will have some snowshoes available to borrow. \n\nAll are welcome. Must be able to safely navigate winter trails.\n\nPlease meet at the front doors of the monastery building at 1:00 pm. If the event is cancelled due to inclement weather\, we will email you by the morning of the tour (please register below).\n\n\nLeader\n\nDr. Amy Alstad is the director of land management and environmental education at Holy Wisdom Monastery. She has a PhD in prairie ecology from UW Madison\, almost a decade of professional experience in the field of restoration ecology and a deep-rooted family tradition of restoring and tending prairies that spans four generations.\n\nIn addition to Dr. Amy Alstad\, there will be several volunteer tour guides from the Friends of Wisdom Prairie.\n\nCost\nThere is no fee to participate.\nRegister\nPlease register below by Feb. 21\, 2024
