The Transformed Heart: Spirituality, Religion, and the Struggle for Integrity

November 16, 2017 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

$125

6 biweekly sessions, Thursdays September 7, 21, October 5, 19, November 2, 16, 2017

Perhaps no issue more dominates contemporary religious conversation than the relationship between personal spirituality and institutional religion. In terms of religious practice, the fastest growing groups are those who claim to be “spiritual but not religious” and “the nones,” those who claim no affiliation with a particular religion.

Yet far more numerous are those who choose to remain engaged in a religious tradition but want to do so in a way consistent with their personal spiritual vision and values. That challenge—how to live within a religious tradition while maintaining intellectual and spiritual integrity—is the focus of this program.

Tom Zanzig recently published a book on this theme titled The Transformed Heart: Spirituality, Religion, and the Struggle for Integrity. It will provide the major content for this six-session, bi-weekly program. Participants will read roughly two chapters of the book before each session, or one chapter per week. When gathering, we will expand on the reading through prayer, lectio divina, contemplative dialog, and open conversation. Our goal is to provide a hospitable environment for participants to reflect on their own experience of the spirituality/religion tension and share in a respectful conversation with others engaged in the adventure of being both spiritual and religious.

Tom Zanzig is an internationally recognized author and speaker on adult spirituality.  He is a member of Holy Wisdom Monastery Sunday Assembly and an Oblate.
