Outing to International Crane Foundation and Aldo Leopold Shack

October 8, 2016 @ 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

Aldo Leopold Shack

The International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin leads the conservation efforts for all 15 species of cranes internationally. They have developed relationships and agreements around the world addressing the health of the landscapes that sustain not only cranes but also people and a wealth of biological diversity. We will see and learn about all of the crane species and their conservation.

The Aldo Leopold Foundation is located on the Leopold farm in Sauk County where world-famous conservationist and environmental philosopher Aldo Leopold restored the ecological health of the farm and wrote A Sand County Almanac. We will be able to visit the famous shack, an abandoned chicken coop the Leopold family used as a retreat on the weekends so they could love the land. Learn about Leopold’s Land Ethic and the influence it continues to have on our relationship to the land.

The bus departs at 8:30 am. Meet at Holy Wisdom Monastery before 8:30 am so you can park and get on the bus before the 8:30 am departure. A box lunch prepared at Holy Wisdom Monastery will be provided. The bus will return to Holy Wisdom around 4:30 pm.

Leaders: Sue Bradley, a member of the Friends of Wisdom Prairie Council, a member of the Sauk County Board and an experienced tour guide at the International Crane Foundation, will guide us through this excellent facility and introduce us to the cranes and their conservation. Charles Bradley, also a member of the Friends of Wisdom Prairie Council, an artist and experienced tour guide at the Aldo Leopold Foundation, will guide us through the facility, including the shack.

Cost: $60, includes admissions, lunch and bus service.

Registration closed.
