The Friends of Wisdom Prairie present: Birds in Classical Mythology, Art & Poetry lecture by Patricia Stinger, dinner and brief annual meeting. You don’t need to be a member of Friends of Wisdom Prairie, all are welcome!
Birds play a significant role in Ancient Greek and Roman literature and myth, and in related works of art. Birds could be depicted as amusing and playful companions, as messengers of the gods, or as ominous agents of Fate. This talk will explore these themes, drawing on material from archaeology, literature, art and history.
The program for this dinner lecture also features the 2022 Friends of Wisdom Prairie annual meeting, which serves as a chance to celebrate our efforts of caring for the earth.
Patricia Stinger earned M.A.s in Latin American Studies and in Russian from Stanford, and a Ph.D. in Classics from University at Buffalo. She lived for several years in Rome and Florence, Italy, and taught ancient and modern languages and literature at the college and high school levels. Now retired, in Madison, she is a volunteer at the UW Arboretum, an enthusiastic birder, artist and poet.
